SAP Business Data Cloud Data Products for AI Agents
As of 2026-09-25
For consultants moving a client from Datasphere-model grounding (M342) to grounding on Business Data Cloud data products directly. Covers what a data product actually contains (typed schema, business KPIs, lineage, governance metadata), Data Product Studio's authoring workflow, the four Joule agent capabilities SAP announced at Sapphire 2026 for data products (targeted H2 2026 GA), zero-copy sharing via Delta Sharing and SAP BDC Connect (GA October 2025, semantic metadata syncing into Unity Catalog), the decision between grounding on a data product versus a Datasphere model, and the governance-metadata and versioning failures that make a data product unsafe for an agent. Closes with the BDC certification landscape (C_BCBDC_2505, C_BDCDA) and three exercises.
What you will learn
- Define what a Data Product in SAP Business Data Cloud contains beyond raw data — schema, KPIs, lineage, governance metadata — and why that matters for an agent
- Explain the Data Product Studio authoring workflow (schema design, SLA, lineage, DAC binding, versioning) well enough to judge whether a product is agent-ready
- Describe the Joule agent capabilities SAP has built directly on data products (data discovery, analytical modelling, business insights, SAC story generation) and their announced timeline
- Explain zero-copy sharing via Delta Sharing and SAP Business Data Cloud Connect, including why semantic metadata syncing matters as much as the rows themselves
- Decide, for a given business object, whether to ground an agent on a BDC data product or a Datasphere model, and justify the choice
- Identify the governance-metadata gaps and versioning risks that make a data product unsafe for an agent to depend on
Module overview
Who this is for. You have completed M342 (Datasphere as a grounding layer) and your client is moving from "we ground an agent on a Datasphere model" to "we ground it on a Business Data Cloud data product instead — what changes?" This module answers that at delivery level: what a data product actually is as an object an agent consumes, what SAP's own Joule agents now do with data products directly, how zero-copy sharing makes a data product reachable outside SAP without duplicating it, and the governance metadata that decides whether an agent using one is safe.
Prerequisites
- M342 (SAP Datasphere as the Grounding Layer for Joule) or equivalent understanding of grounding architecture
- Working familiarity with SAP Business Data Cloud's Catalog and data product concepts (C009, C011, C269)
- Basic understanding of zero-copy sharing / Delta Sharing (C016)
Outcomes
- Assess whether a specific data product is agent-ready by checking its owner, refresh cadence and classification.
- Distinguish, for a given business object, whether grounding should use a BDC data product or a Datasphere model.
- Design a zero-copy grounding path for an agent running outside SAP, specifying what semantic metadata must travel with the data.
- Write a version-pinning and deprecation-notification plan that keeps an agent's tool definitions from silently breaking.
