SAP Joule pricing — what is included, what consumes AI Units, and what to budget

SAP Joule price?

Joule Base — the conversational assistant that finds, navigates and guides in context — is included at no extra cost in every SAP cloud subscription. What costs money is Premium AI, paid in SAP AI Units: Joule Agents at 0.02 AI Units per agent action in 2026, AI features charged per request or record, and one per-user offer, SAP Joule for Consultants, at 35 AI Units per assigned user per month. Agents, apps and workflows a customer builds in Joule Studio are free at design time and billed on runtime consumption, with the Joule Studio runtime free through the end of 2026.

Three layers, and which one you already own

Since mid-2026 SAP presents its Business AI commercial model as three layers. Base AI is included in every SAP cloud subscription and consumes no AI Units: it covers Joule Base — the assistant that answers questions, navigates and gives in-context guidance — and the embedded AI built into the applications. Premium AI is paid in AI Units and is now centred on Joule Agents, plus AI features such as SAP Document AI, Document Grounding and Joule for Developers, and a single per-user product, SAP Joule for Consultants. Custom-built AI is what a customer creates itself in Joule Studio: design time is free within fair-use limits, and productive runtime is billed on actual resource consumption through the BTP Enterprise Agreement, CPEA or pay-as-you-go.

The budgeting consequence is immediate. A customer asking « how much does Joule cost » usually already owns the assistant; the question that carries a number is which agents will run, how many actions a task takes, and how many consultants need the per-user product.

How AI Units are bought, pooled and expired

An AI Unit is SAP's single virtual currency for Premium AI. It is bought annually under SKU 8019164, in blocks of 100, into one shared pool per customer that any Premium capability can draw on. Units are consumed only when Premium AI performs work and expire after twelve months if unused — they do not roll over. The Joule for Consultants product page prices them at €7 per unit in a worked example read on 23 September 2026; SAP Learning and the commercial-model whitepaper publish no currency figure, SAP marks rates as subject to change, and the contract price is negotiated.

Joule Base itself needs a one-time, zero-euro entitlement — SKU 8019544 — to accept SAP's AI terms; a customer that already holds the AI Units SKU skips it.

The published consumption rates, with their dates

Joule Agents: every SAP-delivered agent action costs 0.02 AI Units in 2026. An action is one step — calling a service, triggering a workflow, generating a response — and a task can take several. No agent running means no consumption.

AI features: charged per request or per record. SAP's own Cloud ALM post (8 September 2026) cites Document Grounding at 0.005 AI Units per record; other rates are listed per feature in the SAP Discovery Center AI catalogue.

SAP Joule for Consultants: 35 AI Units per assigned user per month, including a pooled allowance of 22,900 requests per user per month; beyond the pooled total, 2 AI Units per 1,000 requests. Assigned users can be changed monthly.

Joule Studio: design time free within fair-use limits; the runtime for custom-built agents is free through the end of 2026, then billed on consumption through the customer's BTP commercial model.

Decision table — which Joule line goes in which budget

Users only ask, navigate and get guidance → Joule Base → no line: it is in the cloud subscription already, once SKU 8019544 is accepted.

Agents automate multi-step tasks → Joule Agents → a line sized in AI Units from actions per task × tasks per year × 0.02, never per user.

Documents are classified, extracted or grounded → AI features → a line per request or record, at the rate the Discovery Center lists for that feature.

Consultants use SAP's own consulting assistant → Joule for Consultants → 35 AI Units × assigned users × months, plus overage if the pooled requests are exceeded.

The customer builds its own agents in Joule Studio → custom-built AI → no design-time line; a runtime line from 2027, on the BTP commercial model already in place.

A per-user-per-month Joule Premium package is in the contract → check the Q3 2026 transition → most of that content moved into Base AI; renewing it unchanged wastes money.

A worked example, from SAP's own page

SAP's own example on the Joule for Consultants page: 5 consultants × 12 months × 35 AI Units = 2,100 AI Units, which the page prices at €14,700 at its €7 example rate. That is the only currency figure SAP shows, and the page presents it as an example, not a list price.

An agent case, as arithmetic and not as a quote: 10,000 tasks a year at an assumed 5 actions each is 50,000 actions × 0.02 = 1,000 AI Units, about €7,000 if the same example rate applied. The number to measure in a pilot is the real action count per task — that, not the user count, is what moves an agent budget in both directions.

What changed in Q3 2026, and what to verify before renewing

SAP's learning content and pricing FAQ describe a phased transition during Q3 2026. The per-user-per-month packages — Joule Premium for Finance, HCM, Supply Chain, Spend Management and Customer Experience — are retired; most of the generative AI features they contained move into Base AI at no additional cost; customers already using them continue after accepting updated embedded-AI terms. Premium AI is refocused on agents priced per action, and Joule for Consultants becomes the only remaining per-user offer.

Before a renewal or a proposal, verify four things: whether a PUPM package in the contract has moved to Base; which BTP global account holds the AI Units (buying them in the wrong one is a documented pitfall); the expiry date of the current pool; and the consumption view in SAP for Me — Finance & Legal → Business AI shows balance, monthly consumption by product and feature, and units approaching expiry.

The €7 per AI Unit figure is SAP's worked example on the Joule for Consultants page (read 23 September 2026), not a list price: contract prices are negotiated and SAP marks all rates as subject to change. We hold no customer invoice and publish no figure that SAP or our corpus does not.
