Intelligent Scenario Lifecycle Management (ISLM) in S/4HANA
As of 2026-09-25
What is Intelligent Scenario Lifecycle Management (ISLM) in S/4HANA?
ISLM is S/4HANA's self-service framework for training, deploying, activating and getting inference from machine learning scenarios, split into Embedded (same stack, currently APL-only, PAL unsupported) and Side-by-Side (separate stack: SAP AI Core, BTP AI services). As of release 2608, ISLM also runs Gen AI Intelligent Scenarios wired to the Generative AI Hub via communication scenario SAP_COM_0A69 and the ABAP AI SDK.
What ISLM actually manages
Intelligent Scenario Lifecycle Management, as SAP's own S/4HANA Cloud documentation defines it, is "a self-service framework that allows you to perform lifecycle management operations on machine learning scenarios. This includes training, deploying, activating, and fetching an accurate inference result based on the trained intelligent scenarios." An intelligent scenario is SAP's precise term for the underlying object: "an ABAP representation of [a] machine learning business-specific use case." ISLM is not a machine learning engine itself — it is the governance and operations layer that sits above whichever ML provider actually does the work, giving S/4HANA a consistent way to activate, train, monitor and retire predictive and, as of the current release, generative capabilities inside transactional processes.
Why it matters
- SAP explicitly documents that PAL is currently not supported for embedded intelligent scenarios in SAP S/4HANA Cloud — a design that only supports APL there today despite PAL and APL both being listed under the same 'embedded' category.
- ISLM is no longer classic-ML-only: since release 2608 it manages Gen AI Intelligent Scenarios wired to the Generative AI Hub through SAP_COM_0A69 and the ABAP AI SDK, giving an SAP Analytics consultant a concrete, named bridge from generative AI work outside S/4 into ABAP itself.
- The Deploy step in ISLM's lifecycle applies only to Side-by-Side scenarios — a detail that changes what 'deployment' even means depending on which category the scenario belongs to.
Key points
- ISLM = self-service framework for lifecycle management of machine learning scenarios: training, deploying, activating, fetching inference results.
- Intelligent scenario = SAP's term for the ABAP representation of a machine learning business-specific use case.
- Two categories: Embedded (same stack, SAP HANA ML via APL or PAL) vs Side-by-Side (separate stack: Generative AI, SAP Data Intelligence, SAP AI Core, BTP services like Document Information Extraction (renamed Document AI), Business Entity Recognition).
- PAL is currently NOT supported for the embedded scenario type in SAP S/4HANA Cloud; only APL is practically usable there, per SAP Note 2631182 for the required APL version.
- Two Fiori apps: Intelligent Scenarios, Intelligent Scenario Management; six lifecycle stages: Create, Display, Train, Deploy (Side-by-Side only), Activate, Inference Results.
- Since release 2608, ISLM manages Gen AI Intelligent Scenarios, integrating with the Generative AI Hub in SAP AI Core via communication scenario SAP_COM_0A69 (customer-managed Customer Outbound Integration).
- Turnkey automatic enablement is available for SAP-delivered and supporting custom Gen AI scenarios; otherwise deployments are activated manually.
- The ABAP AI SDK is the reuse library giving ABAP systems access to generative AI functionality through ISLM; Gen AI scenarios are built with ABAP Development Tools for Eclipse.
Terms used on this page
- Intelligent scenario
- SAP's term for an ABAP representation of a machine learning business-specific use case, managed through ISLM.
- Embedded scenario
- An intelligent scenario whose ML provider (SAP HANA ML via APL or PAL) runs in the same stack as the business application.
- Side-by-Side scenario
- An intelligent scenario whose ML provider runs in a separate stack, e.g. Generative AI, SAP AI Core, or SAP BTP AI Business Services.
- SAP_COM_0A69
- The Customer Outbound Integration communication scenario connecting ISLM to the Generative AI Hub in SAP AI Core; customer-managed setup.
- ABAP AI SDK
- A reuse library giving an ABAP system access to generative AI functionality via ISLM, used for prompt execution once a deployment is active.
- Turnkey
- ISLM's automatic enablement feature for creating and activating deployments without manual configuration, for supporting SAP-delivered and custom Gen AI scenarios.
