Hiring a freelance SAP LLM consultant, RAG freelancer or contractor
As of 2026-10-10
A freelance SAP LLM consultant connects large language models to SAP data and processes through SAP's own stack: the generative AI hub on SAP AI Core, its orchestration service, grounding, and the SDKs that call them. The work is less about choosing a model than about what surrounds it: masking, filtering, grounding on governed data, evaluation before release and a token budget someone can defend. Hire for those, because any developer can call a model endpoint.
What the role covers on SAP
The generative AI hub gives governed access to models from several providers on the AI Core extended plan. Around a single harmonised model API, the orchestration service chains templating, data masking, content filtering, grounding, translation and fallback. Application code reaches it through SAP Cloud SDK for AI, available for JavaScript and TypeScript, Java and Python, with LangChain and Spring AI integrations.
One detail separates current practice from old tutorials: the CAP LLM plugin was archived on 16 June 2026. New CAP projects combine the SDK with CAP's native AI features, including a vector type and embedding function on HANA Cloud. A consultant still proposing the plugin is working from 2025 material.
Freelance SAP RAG consultant: grounding is the real job
Most SAP LLM use cases are retrieval-augmented. SAP offers three grounding channels: the orchestration grounding module for documents, document grounding for Joule and its agents, and structured grounding through Business Data Cloud data products and SAP Knowledge Graph. Prose belongs in the first; KPIs, exact facts and relationship paths belong in the third, because a vector index cannot follow an approval chain or sum revenue.
Managed pipelines refresh daily and hold at most 8,000 documents each, and Joule document grounding does not yet filter by user permission. A SAP RAG freelancer should name those limits before you ask, and explain how source-system access control is mirrored before indexing.
SAP LLM freelancer or SAP LLM contractor: how to vet them
Ask for evidence rather than vocabulary. Which orchestration modules were configured, and which call failed because a content filter fired? How was masking tested? Entity detection coverage differs by language and entity type, so it must be checked on your own data. Which evaluation ran before go-live? SAP AI Core's Evaluations feature scores prompt and model combinations on your dataset, including RAG groundedness and context relevance judged by a model.
Ask also why they did not fine-tune. Fine-tuning is justified only when format compliance is non-negotiable, the knowledge is stable and call volume is very high; SAP documentation changes every release, so fine-tuned knowledge goes stale.
Where SAP LLM work is advertised
In the Analytics Legends contract corpus of 10 October 2026, 147 of 1,636 live postings carry an LLM or generative AI tag; 41 of them also require SAP skills, all permanent, 20 in Germany. The RAG tag appears on 47 postings, of which only 5 require SAP skills, again all permanent. The other 42 are generic AI engineering roles, largely French freelance missions.
Two readings follow. Freelance SAP LLM and SAP RAG contractor work is rarely advertised: it is engaged directly for bounded tasks. And a strong generic RAG engineer is not automatically an SAP one; check that they know the data models, authorisations and semantic layer they will be grounding on.
Decision table: what to ask for
Prove a use case — Format: bounded proof of concept · Deliverable: grounded prototype with an evaluation run · Check: dataset, metrics, cost per call.
Take it to production — Format: delivery engagement · Deliverable: orchestration configuration, masking and filters, monitoring · Check: resource groups, credentials, token budget.
Review an existing build — Format: short audit · Deliverable: list of risks and fixes · Check: grounding channel per question type, permissions.
Run it long term — Format: internal team or service contract · Deliverable: supervised operation · Check: planned knowledge transfer.
What we cannot assert
No survey we hold measures a day rate for SAP LLM or RAG work; the range quoted is a forecast. Model availability in the generative AI hub changes by release and region and is not listed here. Posting counts depend on how skills are tagged and hold only for the date given.
Frequently asked
Which SDK should an SAP LLM project use?
SAP Cloud SDK for AI in JavaScript or TypeScript, Java or Python. The CAP LLM plugin was archived in June 2026, and the older generative-ai-hub-sdk for Python is deprecated in favour of sap-ai-sdk-gen.
Is RAG or fine-tuning the right choice?
On SAP knowledge, RAG is the production default: it scales beyond the context window, stays current without retraining and cites its sources. Fine-tuning suits output structure, not changing facts.
What day rate should I budget?
No survey measures a rate for SAP LLM work. Our rates study gives a labelled forecast for Joule and agent specialists of £633-770 in the United Kingdom and €1,093-1,330 in Germany.
