SAC Planning architect freelance: scope, market reality and checks

A SAC Planning architect designs the planning models, data actions and data foundation behind finance planning in SAP Analytics Cloud, and increasingly decides whether model data lives in Datasphere through Seamless Planning. Freelance demand is thin in advertised roles: on 4 October 2026, 43 live postings named SAC Planning, 41 of them permanent and 2 freelance. Hire an independent for a design or a rescue, not for steady build capacity.

What the architect designs

A planning model in SAC is read-write: multi-version, time-bounded and audit-trailed, where finance users enter forecasts and budgets and the platform derives the rest. The architect decides how that model is shaped.

The design covers the dimensions and measures of each model, the version structure and how a version is closed, the data actions that run allocations and calculations, the workflow around approvals and the security that decides who can write where. It also covers the link to actuals: where the actual figures come from and how often they reload.

For teams that need several planners to work on the same cycle, Collaborative Planning adds calendar and workflow on top of the models. The architect decides whether it is used at all, which is a scoping question as much as a technical one.

Seamless Planning and the Datasphere decision

Seamless Planning means the planning model is still built and run in SAC, while its fact and master data are stored in a Datasphere space instead of inside the SAC tenant. SAP announced it in 2024 and made it generally available with the Q1 2025 SAC release. It is positioned as the planning layer of Business Data Cloud and needs no separate BDC licence.

This turns a modelling choice into an architecture choice. The architect has to decide whether plan data should sit with the rest of the enterprise data in Datasphere, who owns the space, and how actuals and plans are reconciled. The live market reflects the overlap: of the 43 SAC Planning postings, 13 also name Datasphere and 6 name BDC.

BPC heritage and predictive planning

Many SAC Planning projects replace SAP BPC. BPC came in two models, standard and embedded, and they behave differently: standard BPC keeps its own dimensions, while embedded BPC sits on BW InfoProviders and is tied to the BW estate. An architect who knows which model the client ran can say what moves cleanly and what has to be redesigned. In the postings, 9 of the 43 also name SAP BW.

Predictive Planning is time-series forecasting started from inside a planning model version, with results written into that version as numbers a planner can review and adjust. It is a delivery surface for forecasting, not a separate engine, and an architect should treat it as a feature to be scoped, not a promise.

Market reality: freelance versus permanent

SAC Planning appears in 43 postings. Germany has 9, India 9, Brazil 7, the United Kingdom 4 and Italy 4. The split is 41 permanent and 2 freelance, and 28 are senior. Co-skills are S/4HANA (14), Datasphere (13), SAP BW (9) and BDC (6). None of the 43 publishes a day rate.

On architect titles across the SAP analytics stack, the figure is wider: 69 live postings, 54 permanent, 12 freelance and 3 contract, with a median duration of 9 months on the 7 that state one. So the freelance route into planning architecture exists, but mostly through a project that needs a design before a build team starts, not through a long-running advertised role.

What to check before you hire

Ask for a model they designed and what they would change in it. Ask how they structured versions and data actions, and how they handled a close. Ask which BPC model a migration started from.

Ask where actuals came from and who owned that load. Ask about Seamless Planning: did they run it, or only read about it? Ask whether they have delivered with finance users in the room, because planning succeeds or fails on the planners' acceptance. Finally, ask what happens in the second budget cycle, since a design that works once is not the same as one that survives a year.
