What is SAP BPC (Business Planning and Consolidation)?

SAP's long-serving planning and consolidation product, in Microsoft and NetWeaver flavours and then in Standard and Embedded models. The planning estate it holds is the one SAC Planning and Datasphere are asked to inherit.

What it is

SAP Business Planning and Consolidation is the product that has carried financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and legal consolidation in SAP estates for well over a decade. Its history explains most of the confusion around it: BPC began on a Microsoft platform, moved onto NetWeaver, and then split into two models that behave differently enough to be treated as separate products. Standard BPC keeps its own dimensions and its own administrative surface, familiar to finance teams and largely independent of BW modelling. Embedded BPC sits directly on BW InfoProviders and BW-Integrated Planning, which makes it powerful and makes it inseparable from the BW estate underneath it.

That split is the first thing to establish on any engagement. A statement like "the customer runs BPC" is not yet information. Standard and Embedded have different migration paths, different skill requirements and different exposure to the BW maintenance horizon — an Embedded estate inherits every constraint of the BW system it lives on, and a Standard estate does not.

Why it matters

Planning logic is not reporting logic: rebuilding a BPC model means re-agreeing rules that were settled years ago, against a closing calendar that does not move.

Terms used on this page

Standard BPC: The BPC model that carries its own dimensions and administration, largely independent of BW modelling.
Embedded BPC: The BPC model built directly on BW InfoProviders and BW-Integrated Planning.
Input schedule: The data-entry surface through which planners submit figures — the count of active ones is a better scope signal than the model count.
Business rule: Configured BPC logic — currency translation, allocation, intercompany elimination — carrying agreements made years earlier.
Script logic: The BPC procedural layer expressing calculations and allocations. It is the artefact that has to be re-agreed rather than converted, because it encodes decisions, not data.
Intercompany elimination: The consolidation step removing transactions between group entities. Its correctness is auditable, which is why consolidation scope raises the migration bar sharply.
