SAP BW private cloud edition — what the lift into Business Data Cloud changes, and what it does not
As of 2026-11-01
Since SAP introduced SAP Business Data Cloud on 13 February 2025, a BW owner has one more route than the classic choice between staying on SAP BW 7.5 and converting to SAP BW/4HANA: lifting the existing system into the private cloud component of SAP BDC. SAP's reference architecture names the two products SAP Business Warehouse, private cloud edition (for SAP BW on SAP NetWeaver) and SAP BW/4HANA, private cloud edition. The lift changes who operates the system and which maintenance date applies; it does not change the models, flows or code. This page sets out, as of November 2026, what SAP states about the dates, the prerequisites and the steps that follow, with the source of each statement.
Run the SAP BW self-diagnostic — eight questions, your route and your dates
What SAP means by private cloud edition
SAP Learning describes the route as lifting an existing SAP BW or SAP BW/4HANA on-premise deployment to the private cloud component of SAP BDC, and states that SAP then takes over provisioning and management. The lift can be carried out by SAP or by partners following SAP RISE guided services.
Two consequences follow. The lift is offered for both SAP BW and SAP BW/4HANA, so it is not itself a conversion: a BW 7.5 system remains a BW 7.5 system. And the operating model changes — infrastructure and system management move to SAP — while the content of the warehouse travels as it is.
The maintenance dates, product by product
• SAP BW 7.4 and older: mainstream maintenance ended at the end of 2020; SAP offers no extended maintenance for these versions. • SAP BW 7.5 on premise: maintenance to the end of 2027, extended maintenance to 2030 (SAP NetWeaver 7.5 maintenance strategy). • SAP BW 7.5 lifted to the private cloud component of SAP BDC: SAP Learning states that mainstream maintenance is then extended to 2030, instead of 2027. • SAP BW/4HANA on premise: aligned with the SAP S/4HANA maintenance extension and maintained until at least 2040. • SAP BW/4HANA lifted to the private cloud component of SAP BDC: SAP Learning gives maintenance until 2040.
The point for a BW 7.5 owner is the third line: the private cloud edition reaches 2030 under mainstream maintenance, where the on-premise system reaches 2030 only with extended maintenance. Neither route goes beyond 2030 in the sources we could open.
Prerequisites before a lift
SAP's reference architecture Modernizing SAP BW with SAP Business Data Cloud — last updated 12 May 2026 and marked by SAP as archived, so check each level against current SAP documentation — lists the entry conditions by release:
• SAP BW 7.5: an SAP HANA database (upgrade if on any other database) and support package SPS24 or the latest SPS. • Releases before 7.5: upgrade to SAP BW 7.5 on SAP HANA first. • SAP BW/4HANA 2021: SPS04 or the latest SPS. • SAP BW/4HANA 1.0 and 2.0: upgrade to the latest support package of SAP BW/4HANA 2023.
For a BW 7.4 system on a non-HANA database, the lift is therefore a second project, after a technical upgrade and a database migration.
What comes after the lift
SAP Learning describes four steps. First, lift the deployment into the private cloud component of SAP BDC. Second, generate data products from SAP BW InfoProviders — SAP BDC includes the tools for this, which SAP names the Data Product Generator for SAP Business Data Cloud. Third, combine these data products with others in SAP Datasphere data models and build applications in SAP Analytics Cloud; BW-generated data products can also be shared with SAP Databricks and other data platforms. Fourth, decommission SAP BW over time: SAP states that the long-term goal is the complete decommissioning of SAP BW, at the customer's pace.
SAP Datasphere is the current name; it was introduced on 8 March 2023 as the next generation of SAP Data Warehouse Cloud, the former name.
When the lift makes sense, and when it does not
The lift fits an owner whose BW 7.5 system is on SAP HANA, whose company accepts a private cloud run by SAP, and who wants BW data to feed SAP Datasphere, SAP Analytics Cloud or SAP Databricks as data products, while retiring BW flows over several years. It buys mainstream maintenance to 2030 and moves operations to SAP.
It fits poorly when the existing model is the problem: a lift moves every layer and every workaround unchanged. It is also not an answer for a system that must stay in the company's own data centre; there, SAP BW/4HANA on premise remains the SAP route. In every case, write the exit into the plan: which flows become data products, which are retired, and by when.
What we cannot assert
SAP publishes no price for the private cloud edition, so none is given. Whether a given contract qualifies for the lift is a commercial question for SAP. The prerequisites come from an SAP reference architecture that SAP has marked archived; confirm the support-package levels in current SAP documentation. SAP Community posts describe a further SAP BDC offering for SAP BW NetWeaver beyond 2030; we could not open the primary page and give no date for it.
Frequently asked
What is SAP BW private cloud edition?
SAP's reference architecture names SAP Business Warehouse, private cloud edition and SAP BW/4HANA, private cloud edition: an existing BW or BW/4HANA system lifted into the private cloud component of SAP Business Data Cloud, where SAP takes over provisioning and management.
Does SAP BW private cloud edition extend the 2027 date?
For SAP BW 7.5, SAP Learning states that mainstream maintenance is extended to 2030 instead of 2027 after the lift. On premise, 2030 is reached only with extended maintenance.
Do I need BW/4HANA for the private cloud edition?
No. SAP documents the lift for existing SAP BW and SAP BW/4HANA deployments. SAP BW 7.5 needs an SAP HANA database and a minimum support package; older releases need an upgrade to BW 7.5 on HANA first.
Is BW private cloud edition the same as SAP BW bridge?
No. SAP BW bridge runs inside SAP Datasphere and is a different component; see our concept page on SAP BW bridge for how the two routes differ.
What happens to SAP BW 7.5 after 2030?
The SAP sources we could open state no maintenance beyond 2030 for SAP BW 7.5, on premise or in the private cloud edition. SAP Community posts report a further offering; check its primary SAP page and SAP Notes before planning on it.
Who can perform the lift?
SAP Learning names SAP or partners following SAP RISE guided services. Our directory lists firms with a declared SAP BW/4HANA practice.
