SAP BW 7.5 end of maintenance — the date, the mechanism, and what it changes

SAP extended the SAP BW 7.5 extended-maintenance window to 31 December 2030, having previously set it at 2027, in response to customer feedback on migration readiness. That is a statement about one product, one release family and one support phase. It says nothing about SAP BW/4HANA, whose maintenance was aligned separately with the SAP Business Suite roadmap to 2040, and it does not override what a specific customer's contract says.

What extended maintenance actually is

Extended maintenance is the paid, time-limited support phase that follows mainstream maintenance. Two words in that sentence do the work. Paid means contractual: a customer is in it because they bought into it, not because their release reached a date. Time-limited means the end is a scheduled event rather than a product decision taken later.

That is why two customers on the same release can hold different practical horizons, and why a date quoted without the contract in hand is a guess wearing a suit.

The expiry of this phase is the hard date for the cohort that is still on classic BW. For every other cohort it is background information — relevant to the market, not to their own plan.

Why SAP moved it, and what that signals

The stated reason was customer feedback on BW migration readiness. Read plainly, that is an acknowledgement that the installed base was not going to clear the original window — which is consistent with what the market looks like from the delivery side, where the constraint has always been available capacity rather than customer willingness.

The signal for consultants is specific and was stated with the change: brownfield work on BW 7.5 is no longer sunset-2027. The compliance argument for moving is gone from that cohort's business case.

What did not move is the destination. Datasphere and Business Data Cloud remain the endorsed forward direction for both classic BW and BW/4HANA, so nothing about the target architecture needs re-litigating because of this change.

What this does not tell you

It does not tell you the maintenance end of BW/4HANA, which is governed by a separate, independent alignment with the SAP Business Suite roadmap out to 2040.

It does not tell you the end date for a BW 7.x release that is not 7.5, nor for BW on HANA as a distinct deployment, nor for a BW Bridge tenant, whose horizon follows its parent product rather than a schedule of its own.

And it does not tell you whether your organisation is in extended maintenance at all. That is a contract question, answered by the contract.

The five-minute verification

Identify the exact product and release from the system, not from a project document. Confirm from the maintenance terms in the customer's own contract whether extended maintenance was purchased and through when. Then reconcile both against SAP's maintenance schedule for that precise version.

The strongest form of this is not to bring the date at all: have the customer's basis team pull their own maintenance end and hand it to you. It is verifiable, it belongs to them, and it removes the one claim a competitor can use to discredit the rest of your work.

The failure mode this replaces is well documented and currently very visible: a slide that says a year with no product version beside it. Everyone who published 2027 that way is now being corrected in public.

What we cannot assert

We cannot say whether a given customer is inside the extended-maintenance window, because participation is contractual and not derivable from the release. We also do not publish maintenance dates for BW releases other than the announcement recorded here — a date we cannot source is a date we do not write.
