SAP BW end of life 2027 — what that date was, and what replaced it
As of 2026-08-14
The 2027 that circulated as "SAP BW end of life" was the end of the extended-maintenance window for SAP BW 7.5. SAP has since moved it to 31 December 2030, and separately aligned SAP BW/4HANA maintenance with the SAP Business Suite roadmap to 2040. Neither of those is your date. "BW" names four different products, they do not share a maintenance horizon, and the only authority for a given system is SAP's maintenance schedule for that exact release under that customer's contract.
Which BW the date was about
Before any deadline discussion is meaningful, establish which product is in scope, because the market collapses four things into one word. Classic BW 7.x runs the ABAP stack on any database — Oracle, DB2, SQL Server or HANA. BW on HANA is the same ABAP application with HANA underneath: a database swap, not a new product. BW/4HANA is a separate product with its own code line, HANA-only, with a deliberately reduced object model. BW Bridge is a BW runtime hosted inside SAP Datasphere, intended as a landing zone for existing BW content rather than a place to build new models.
The 2027-then-2030 window belongs to the first family — SAP BW 7.5 — and only to it. A statement about "BW" that does not say which of the four is meant is not yet a statement about anything actionable, and a deadline quoted without a product generation beside it is the single fastest way to lose credibility in a room where a basis lead is sitting.
What actually changed, and what did not
SAP extended the SAP BW 7.5 extended-maintenance window to 31 December 2030, having previously set it at 2027, citing customer feedback on migration readiness. Independently, BW/4HANA maintenance was aligned with the SAP Business Suite roadmap to 2040. Two separate decisions, two products, and no reason to expect one to move because the other did.
What did not change is the direction of travel. Datasphere and Business Data Cloud remain the endorsed forward path for both products, which is why an architecture decision taken under the old date is still pointed at the right target. The practical consequence for delivery is narrow: brownfield work on BW 7.5 is no longer sunset-driven, so any business case that rested entirely on the deadline now has to be rewritten on economics.
Four cohorts, and they still do not share a deadline
Customers still running classic BW under extended maintenance carry the hardest date and decide first — and they are the cohort whose plan the extension actually moved.
Customers running ECC alongside BW get pulled into the conversation as part of a broader S/4HANA transformation. Their BW decision is a dependent clause inside a larger programme, not a standalone project, and their real timeline is set by the ERP programme's cutover, not by a BW maintenance line.
Customers already on BW/4HANA are weighing whether to move again so soon. They modernised recently, so the payback argument has to clear a higher bar, and a maintenance horizon at 2040 makes that bar higher still.
Customers who bypassed SAP's warehouse entirely — Snowflake, Databricks — are being courted back through BDC's SAP-native semantic layer. For them this is an evaluation, not a deadline, and urgency language reads as a tell.
A generic "BW is ending" pitch addresses the wrong cohort three times out of four, and it did so even before the date moved.
How big the affected population actually is
Be careful with installed-base numbers here, because the market recycles two of them interchangeably and they belong to different products. Our registry carries a floor of roughly 18,000 BW customers — a floor derived from public disclosure, not a census. SAP does not publish a BW customer count on a regular cadence; the figures circulating range from about 15,000 active to about 18,000 installed; and four commercial customer databases disagree with each other by a factor of six, from 879 to 5,693 named companies, all paywalled and all marketing-sourced.
The number around 17,000 belongs to ECC, SAP's previous-generation ERP, and it has migrated into BW sentences often enough that it now appears on both sides of the same argument. Within the main European market, roughly 4,000 BW customers sit in the cohort whose maintenance window is the live question. Anyone quoting a precise BW customer count without naming the source and the date is quoting marketing.
Getting the date that actually applies to you
The method matters more than any number on this page. Establish the product and release from the system itself, not from a slide. Pull the maintenance terms from the customer's own contract, because extended-maintenance participation is contractual and not automatic. Then confirm both against SAP's maintenance schedule for that exact product version.
The strongest version of that move is to have the customer's own basis team produce it and bring it to you. It is verifiable, it is theirs, and it removes the one claim a competitor can use to discredit everything else you present. The pattern this whole page exists to prevent is the slide that says a year with no product version beside it — and 2027 is now the worked example of why that slide ages badly.
What we cannot assert
We cannot state a single end-of-life date for SAP BW, and we do not publish one. Maintenance end depends on product, release and contract terms, and extended maintenance is a paid, contractual phase that not every customer is in. The two dates on this page are the product-level announcements our corpus records — they are not a substitute for reading your own maintenance terms.
Frequently asked
Is SAP BW dead in 2027?
No. 2027 was the previously announced end of the extended-maintenance window for SAP BW 7.5, and SAP moved it to 31 December 2030. Other BW products were never governed by that date at all.
What is the SAP BW/4HANA end-of-life date?
BW/4HANA maintenance was aligned with the SAP Business Suite roadmap to 2040 in a decision independent of the BW 7.5 extension. As always, what applies to a specific system depends on its release and contract.
Why do search results still show 2027 everywhere?
Because the date was widely published before it changed, and because most of the pages carrying it never named which BW product they meant. A date without a product generation beside it cannot be corrected by its own readers.
Does the extension change the target platform?
No. Datasphere and Business Data Cloud remain the endorsed destination for both classic BW and BW/4HANA. The countdown moved; the direction did not.
How many customers are affected?
Our registry floor is around 18,000 BW customers overall, with roughly 4,000 in the main European market inside the live maintenance conversation. Treat both as floors from public disclosure rather than as a census, and do not attach the ~17,000 ECC figure to BW.
