What is BARC Score?

The semantic layer — not visualisation or seat price — is the durable line between enterprise-grade and departmental BI; SAC's shortcut is reusing the BW model, at the cost of portability.

Selecting an enterprise BI and analytics platform ranks among the highest-leverage architecture decisions an SAP analytics organization makes, because the choice compounds: a well-chosen platform becomes a governed intelligence layer that gets more valuable every year content is added to it, while a poorly chosen one accumulates technical debt that constrains every subsequent initiative — data models that must be rebuilt, licenses renegotiated, users retrained, all while the business keeps waiting for answers.

Why It Matters

The BARC Score for Enterprise BI & Analytics Platforms exists because the market has converged on a familiar marketing pitch — self-service and governance, breadth and depth, low cost and fast time-to-value — that every vendor claims and that only careful, criterion-by-criterion evaluation can actually verify. Buying on a single dimension, such as which platform produces the prettiest chart or which has the cheapest per-seat price, routinely produces regret two years in, once the organization discovers it also needed row-level security, a governed semantic layer, or an API that AI agents could consume safely.

Why it matters in practice

Without a versioned, decoupled semantic layer, every team builds its own calculation logic and contradictory numbers proliferate until trust erodes.
SAC's live connection to BW/4HANA or Datasphere reuses the BW semantic model directly, eliminating a second modelling layer — but couples the model tightly to the SAP stack.
Selection must resolve four unavoidable tensions explicitly (governance vs self-service, breadth vs depth, TCO vs time-to-value, lock-in vs simplicity), not optimise on one dimension.

In 2026 the semantic layer's consumers include not just dashboards and mobile apps but Joule agents and third-party LLM clients connecting via MCP — a fragmented semantic layer now produces confidently wrong AI answers at machine speed, not just disagreeing board decks.
SAP's AI Agent Hub (launched in SAP LeanIX November 2025, extended through 2026 as the Business AI Platform's governance layer, AI Governance Assistant announced 2026-09-22) is the emerging control point for which agents and MCP servers may read which certified definitions.
SAP Knowledge Graph is the shared context layer both the generative AI hub's orchestration service (for RAG/grounding) and Joule read — it only reduces hallucination if it reflects the same certified semantics this Score evaluates, not a separate shadow model.

Terms used on this page

Enterprise BI tier: BARC's classification for BI platforms deployed at multi-thousand-user scale with mission-critical SLA, governed semantic layer, and enterprise IT integration. Scored differently from self-service or embedded BI.
MicroStrategy: US-based enterprise BI vendor, historically strong in hypercard/mobile BI and high-concurrency reporting. One of the oldest enterprise BI platforms and still in BARC enterprise-BI peer sets.
Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC): Oracle's cloud BI platform, the successor to OBIEE. Competes with SAC in the enterprise-BI tier, particularly in Oracle ERP accounts and Fusion HCM/ERP customers.
Semantic layer: The governed layer where business terms (revenue, headcount, gross margin) get one auditable definition consumed by every report, dashboard, and — in 2026 — AI agent, rather than being recomputed independently by each consumer.
SAP Knowledge Graph: The shared, business-friendly model of a customer's SAP entities, processes and relationships that both the generative AI hub's orchestration service (for RAG/grounding) and Joule read to ground AI reasoning — only useful if it reflects the same certified semantics as the platform's BI layer.
MCP (Model Context Protocol): An open, Anthropic-originated protocol standardising how an LLM application discovers and calls external tools and data sources. SAP ships MCP servers (BTP administration, Integration Suite MCP Gateway) so any MCP-compatible client can query SAP systems — including, potentially, a governed semantic layer.
AI Agent Hub: SAP's cross-vendor governance registry for agents, LLMs and MCP servers, launched inside SAP LeanIX in November 2025 and extended through 2026 as part of the Business AI Platform's governance layer, with an AI Governance Assistant (EU AI Act/NIST risk classification) announced 2026-09-22.
