What it is

At Sapphire Orlando 2026, SAP announced a strategic partnership with Anthropic that makes Claude models available natively inside the SAP Business AI Platform through the SAP Model Gateway. Concretely, this means Claude now sits in the same multi-LLM routing layer as OpenAI's GPT-4o, Google's Gemini, and SAP's own fine-tuned models — all of them callable by Joule agents and by any SAP AI-powered application, without the customer having to negotiate or manage a direct Anthropic API relationship of their own.

Why it matters

The SAP Business AI Platform is the standardization layer that lets SAP applications and Joule agents consume large-language-model capability without hard-wiring themselves to one vendor. It handles four things a customer would otherwise have to build: authentication through the SAP AI Core service account rather than customer-managed API keys; prompt routing that sends a request to whichever model fits the task type and cost tier; content filtering that applies Joule's guardrails before and after every model call; and audit logging that writes each inference call to the SAP Audit Journal, which matters directly for EU AI Act Article 13 transparency obligations.
