What is SAP × Anthropic?

At Sapphire on 12 May 2026 SAP and Anthropic announced that Claude becomes a primary reasoning and agentic capability across SAP's portfolio, embedded in the SAP Business AI Platform and Joule; in parallel, successive Claude models have been consumable through SAP's generative AI hub (via AWS Bedrock) since 2024, the latest listed being Claude Opus 4.8 (July 2026).

Two layers of one partnership

The SAP–Anthropic relationship has two layers that consultants often mix up.

Layer 1 — Claude as a model you can call from SAP AI Core. Since 2024, SAP's generative AI hub (a capability of SAP AI Core, available only with the extended service plan) has exposed selected Anthropic models through AWS Bedrock. The SAP AI Core "What's New" record traces the sequence: Claude 3.7 Sonnet (April 2025), Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4 (June 2025), Claude Haiku 4.5 (December 2025), Claude Opus 4.5 via Amazon Bedrock with the extended plan (January 2026), Claude Opus 4.6 (March 2026), Claude Opus 4.7 (May 2026) and Claude Opus 4.8 (July 2026). Each entry points to SAP Note 3437766, which is the authoritative list of available models, versions and their metering. Each entry is also flagged "not for sovereign cloud offerings". Usage is metered in GenAI tokens converted into capacity units, like any other hub model.

Why it matters

It separates two things proposals routinely conflate: Claude as a generative AI hub model (available since 2024, latest listed Opus 4.8) and Claude as the reasoning layer of Joule agents (announced 12 May 2026, no GA dates published).
It sets the procurement answer: SAP-embedded Claude is consumed and metered as SAP consumption, without a separate Anthropic contract.
It flags two hard constraints: hub model versions lag Anthropic's line-up, and Anthropic hub entries are marked not for sovereign cloud offerings.

The developer/integration path treats Claude as an MCP client like any other: SAP data and actions are exposed through governed MCP endpoints (Integration Suite MCP Gateway, no-code MCP servers from REST APIs), and Claude consumes them under the caller's own authorisations, not elevated ones.
As of this review, SAP's own AI Agent Hub — the cross-vendor registry meant to inventory exactly these Claude-powered Joule agents — traces its real launch to SAP LeanIX in November 2025, not to the 12 May 2026 Sapphire announcement; check a Claude-powered agent's actual Hub registration before citing it as governed.
