What is Joule AI Copilot?

Joule isn't a generic LLM wrapper — its semantic grounding, DAC inheritance, and governed action orchestration are the three architectural anchors that distinguish it from 'ChatGPT for your data' alternatives.

What it is

Joule is SAP's AI assistant, woven across the SAP estate — S/4HANA, SAP Analytics Cloud, SuccessFactors, Concur, Ariba, the Business Technology Platform, and SAP Business Data Cloud — so that a user can ask a question in plain language and get an answer grounded in that company's own data, not a generic model's best guess. It is tempting to describe Joule as "ChatGPT for SAP," but that undersells the architecture in a way that matters for anyone advising a client on where to place trust. Three anchors separate Joule from a bolt-on chat widget. First, semantic grounding: Joule reads Datasphere's analytic models, the SAP Knowledge Graph, and business-process metadata, so an answer cites the specific measure, dimension, or process step it came from rather than free-associating from training data. Second, it inherits data access control: every answer is filtered through the same authorization rules that already govern who sees what in SAC and in Delta Sharing, so Joule cannot casually surface a number a user was never entitled to see. Third, it does not stop at answering — Joule can invoke governed actions, creating a purchase order or approving a leave request through the same controlled action definitions a human would use in the underlying transaction.

Why it matters

Every Joule answer is filtered through the same Catalog DAC rules governing SAC and Delta Sharing — a security guarantee a generic chatbot layered on top of exports can't offer.
Answers cite the underlying Datasphere object (this measure, this dimension) rather than free-text generation, making Joule's outputs auditable rather than merely plausible.
Action orchestration means Joule can invoke governed SAP transactions directly (create a PO, post a journal entry), not just answer — a materially different risk profile than Q&A.
