Joule — SAP's AI Assistant, Agents and Skills

What it is

SAP's Help Portal defines Joule as "an AI solution embedded into the flow of work across SAP and non-SAP systems", with a conversational UI that gives contextual insights and task guidance where people work. Technically it is a multi-tenant application on SAP BTP (Cloud Foundry); each tenant's data is isolated, the capabilities bundled into a customer's Joule depend on the SAP products it licenses, and Joule is updated automatically when SAP adds or changes capabilities. SAP's own training insists Joule is "not just a copilot": since Sapphire 2026 it is positioned as the engagement layer of the Autonomous Enterprise, sitting on top of the SAP Autonomous Suite, Industry AI and the SAP Business AI Platform.

Why it matters

• Joule's value depends on which SAP products are licensed and integrated — the same word covers a navigation helper in one landscape and a set of cross-domain agents in another, so scope must be stated product by product.
• Identity is the most common failure point: Joule and every integrated product must share one Cloud Identity Services tenant and a consistent Global User ID, or users fragment and agents act under the wrong identity.
• Since Sapphire 2026 the activation path is shifting to SAP-Managed Joule from SAP for Me; customer-managed BTP set-ups remain valid but are now the exception to plan a migration for.
