SAP AI on premise and in private cloud: what reaches your landscape

As of 2026-11-06

Most SAP AI is delivered as cloud services on BTP; what reaches an on-premise or private cloud landscape depends on the path, not on wishes. S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition reaches Joule, Joule Studio agents and knowledge graph grounding through BTP and the Cloud Connector, with a feature list that lags public cloud. S/4HANA on-premise and ECC get side-by-side AI under the SAP API policy; at Sapphire in May 2026 SAP announced most Joule assistants and agents for them, only for customers committed to RISE with a Max Success Plan. BW 7.5 reaches the cloud data layer through the Data Product Generator for SAP-managed scenarios.

Why it matters now

Sixty-one of the 531 audience questions at SAP TechEd 2026 were about on-premise, private cloud, ECC or hybrid landscapes, and 99 of the 956 knowledge units touch Clean Core, Private Edition or hybrid deployment. The questions were the same from every room: will Joule be available for on-premise; can custom agents call on-premise OData through the Cloud Connector; will the knowledge graph support S/4HANA Private Edition on RISE, or ECC; does the Data Product Generator come to BW on-premise without moving to BW Private Cloud Edition; where data is stored when a Private Edition system uses SAP's prediction models on AI Core.

The installed base is the reason. BW 7.5 mainstream maintenance ends on 31 December 2027 with paid extended maintenance to 2030; BW/4HANA is maintained to 2040. Our live adverts show BW still in 29.1 % of the roughly 1,900 adverts with skills on 16 October 2026, and S/4HANA in 20.5 %. Our news feed between 19 October and 5 November 2026 carried 110 items on Clean Core, S/4HANA or RISE out of 300: the migration conversation and the AI conversation are the same conversation.

An SAP Community post of 3 November 2026 on trust and security boundaries from Joule to SAP Cloud ERP Private is the clearest primary description of the private path to date; read it before the next steering committee.

Decision guide by situation

S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition (RISE) — Joule, Joule Studio agents and SAP-managed knowledge graph grounding are reachable through BTP and the Cloud Connector; confirm each feature for your release and whether custom fields reach the graph. Predictions through SAP's models on AI Core transfer data at runtime; ask where training data persists.

S/4HANA on-premise, no RISE — No embedded Joule. AI arrives side by side on BTP: AI Core, generative AI hub, custom agents calling released APIs through the Cloud Connector. The authorization design is entirely yours.

ECC — Outside the RISE and Max Success Plan conditions, agents are possible only under the SAP API policy, against released interfaces, with no Joule; most value sits in document and process automation outside the core.

BW 7.5 or BW/4HANA — The Data Product Generator serves SAP-managed scenarios; a TechEd question on availability for BW on-premise without lift to Private Cloud Edition received roadmap language, not a date. Plan grounding on data products, not on BEx queries.

Hybrid, with a cloud data layer already — Business Data Cloud is where AI readiness is built; the on-premise systems become sources.

Options compared

Stay on-premise, add side-by-side AI on BTP — Reach: AI Core, generative AI hub, custom agents · Not reached outside the RISE and Max Success Plan conditions: embedded Joule, delivered agents · Risk: all integration and authorization work is yours.

Move to Private Edition — Reach: Joule and Studio agents with a lagging feature list, knowledge graph for SAP data · Not reached: some public-cloud features at launch · Risk: edition-specific gaps discovered after the business saw a public demo.

Move to Public Edition — Reach: the full delivered catalogue first · Not reached: heavy custom code · Risk: the migration is the project, not the AI.

Build the data layer first (Business Data Cloud, Datasphere) — Reach: AI-ready data products regardless of ERP edition · Not reached: transactional agents inside the ERP · Risk: lowest regret; it is needed in every other option.

What shipped and what is announced

Available: BW Data Product Generator (BDC path) (generally available); SAP-RPT-TS (generally available); SAP-RPT-Decisions (generally available).

Announced, not available: SAP Knowledge Graph on customer data (GA planned for Q1 2027); SAP Enterprise AI Gateway (GA planned for Q1 2027). A date here is a plan, not a commitment.

Announced with conditions: at Sapphire in May 2026 SAP said most Joule assistants and agents would be opened to ECC and on-premise S/4HANA for customers committed to RISE (Max Success Plan), while TechEd answers kept standard agents focused on cloud ERP; without that commitment plan on side-by-side AI. Not announced: the Data Product Generator for BW on-premise outside Private Cloud Edition.

Pitfalls

Demonstrating on a public-cloud tenant and signing for a private one. The business remembers the demo.

Assuming the Cloud Connector solves authorization. It solves connectivity; propagation of the user's identity is a separate design and was asked about repeatedly at TechEd.

Grounding an agent on BW queries because they exist. Data products are the unit SAP's AI consumes.

Mistaking the 2027 BW date for an AI deadline. It is a maintenance date; the AI path needs the data layer regardless of when BW stops.

Reading roadmap language as a commitment for BW on-premise tooling. SAP's roadmap material changes without notice.

What to do Monday morning

Write the landscape on one page: edition, release, connectivity, and the AI features SAP lists for that edition today.

For each candidate AI use case, mark the path: embedded, side-by-side on BTP, or data layer only.

Start the data product inventory for the objects AI needs, whatever the ERP edition.

Ask SAP in writing where training and inference data persist for the prediction models you plan to use.

What we cannot assert

SAP planned general availability of its on-premise Joule offer for May 2026; we could not confirm from a primary source which assistants and agents are live. SAP has not published a feature matrix of Joule by edition and release that we could cite; the private-edition feature lag is reported in TechEd answers, not quantified. The Data Product Generator for BW on-premise outside Private Cloud Edition has no date.

Frequently asked

Will Joule be available for S/4HANA on-premise?

Conditionally. At Sapphire in May 2026 SAP announced that most Joule assistants and agents would reach ECC and on-premise S/4HANA for customers who have committed the majority of their landscape to RISE, under a Max Success Plan; TechEd 2026 answers kept standard agents focused on cloud ERP. Without that commitment, on-premise and ECC customers get side-by-side AI services on BTP.

Can a Joule Studio agent call on-premise OData APIs?

Through the Cloud Connector, against released APIs, yes in principle; the user identity must be propagated by design or the agent runs as a technical user.

Does the Data Product Generator work on BW on-premise?

For SAP-managed scenarios and with Private Cloud Edition in SAP's material; availability for on-premise BW without that move was asked at TechEd and answered with roadmap language.

Where does our data go when Private Edition uses SAP's prediction models?

SAP's models on AI Core receive data at runtime; whether and where training data persists was asked at TechEd and is to be confirmed with SAP for your contract.
