SAP HANA MCP server: community option and safer routes
As of 2026-10-18
We found no official SAP MCP server for HANA or HANA Cloud: a search of the SAP Help Portal on 18 October 2026 returned none. The one that exists is community-built (MIT, 34 tools): schema discovery and guarded SQL execution, with data-changing statements blocked unless explicitly enabled. It supports stdio and HTTP.
What exists, honestly
Official: nothing verified. SAP publishes MCP servers for development tools, BTP administration, Integration Suite and LeanIX, but our search did not surface one for HANA Cloud. That can change quickly, so check SAP Help before you start.
Community: SAP HANA MCP Server, MIT licensed, covering SAP HANA and HANA Cloud. It does schema discovery and guarded SQL execution through 34 tools, and it blocks data-changing statements unless you enable them. It is not an SAP product and the catalogue records no maturity label.
What an assistant can do with it
Explore: list schemas, tables and columns so the assistant knows the real structure instead of guessing. Query: run SQL against HANA, read-only by default. That is the scenario that fits a consultant: an assistant that helps you understand an unfamiliar schema, drafts a query, runs it and explains the result.
It does not understand SAP semantics. A HANA schema behind S/4HANA or BW/4HANA is full of technical names, and the assistant reads what the database holds, not what the business means. Pair it with documentation or a semantic layer.
A typical safe use is a design review session. A consultant joins a project, points the assistant at a sandbox copy of the schema, and asks it to map tables to the business objects in the specification. The assistant lists the tables, samples a few rows, and proposes the joins. Everything is read-only, the data is non-productive, and the output is a draft that a human validates. Moving beyond this pattern changes the risk class, and the checks below should be repeated for each step.
Local or remote
The server supports both stdio and HTTP. In stdio it runs on your machine and uses the HANA credentials in its configuration. In HTTP mode it is a network service, and the catalogue does not describe its authentication, so assume you must put it behind your own gateway and identity layer.
Checks before production
Use a dedicated HANA database user with SELECT only on the schemas you intend to expose. Do not rely on the server's own guard alone; a statement filter is a safeguard, and database privileges are the control. Keep the write-enable switch off. Check what rows can be returned: an assistant that can SELECT can also send personal data to the model provider, so apply masking or restrict to non-personal schemas. Log queries under an identifiable account. Add statement timeouts and row limits in HANA, since an agent can generate an expensive query on a shared instance.
Until you have done that, treat a production HANA connection as out of scope.
Better-governed alternatives
If the goal is analytics over modelled data, a server at the Datasphere or Business Data Cloud level respects the modelling layer, although the ones that exist there are community too. For business data in S/4HANA, OData is the cleaner interface: the AWS for SAP MCP Server (OData V2/V4 discovery, reads, optional writes, allow-listing) or the community OData-to-MCP server on BTP. For governed enterprise exposure, SAP Integration Suite MCP Gateway puts APIs and external MCP servers behind one entry point with authentication, rate limiting and monitoring, but needs the Premium or Enhanced edition and the Integration Cell runtime.
Joule and agent platforms
Joule Studio can attach MCP servers to a Joule agent, so a HANA server could in principle be a tool for an agent. Given that the only HANA server is community-built, put it behind a gateway and a read-only database user before it goes near a shared agent.
For firm and day-rate data on the SAP data market, Analytics Legends has a separate read-only MCP server, public tranche without a key.
What we cannot assert
Authentication in HTTP mode and maturity of the community HANA server are not stated in the sources we verified (18 October 2026).
Frequently asked
Is there an official SAP HANA MCP server?
Not that we could verify. The SAP Help Portal search on 18 October 2026 found none for HANA Cloud.
Is the community server safe to use?
It blocks data-changing statements by default, but safety must come from a read-only database user, not only from the server's filter.
Does it work with HANA Cloud?
The catalogue lists both SAP HANA and SAP HANA Cloud as products.
Can I run it remotely?
It supports HTTP as well as stdio, but authentication for the HTTP mode is not described in the catalogue.
