SAP Joule Studio pricing: what is free, what you pay for, and what changes after December 2026

Joule Studio has no licence fee of its own that SAP publishes. Design-time tooling for building and testing agents is free under fair-use limits, and SAP is running a time-bound promotion under which deploying and running custom agents on the SAP-managed Joule Studio runtime is free until December 2026 for select customers (SAP News, 27 October 2026). After the promotion, or for customers outside it, the runtime is custom-built AI, billed on consumption through the customer's BTP commercial model, and the models the agents call are metered separately.

The three cost lines behind a Joule Studio agent

A custom agent built in Joule Studio can generate three different charges, and a budget that names only one of them is incomplete.

The build: design-time tooling, in which you design, test and evaluate agents and n8n workflows, is free under fair-use limits according to SAP's TechEd press release of 27 October 2026.

The run: hosting the agent on the SAP-managed Joule Studio runtime. Free until December 2026 for the select customers in SAP's promotion; otherwise, and afterwards, it is custom-built AI that SAP bills on actual resource consumption through the BTP Enterprise Agreement, CPEA or pay-as-you-go.

The reasoning: every model call the agent makes. Generative AI on SAP's platform is metered in tokens, converted into BTP capacity units, as SAP's AI Core metering documentation describes. If the custom agent also invokes SAP-delivered Joule Agents, each of their actions consumes 0.02 AI Units in 2026, a fourth meter that sits in the Premium AI pool, not in BTP.

Status first: which Joule Studio is the client paying for?

The name covers two products. The classic edition lives in SAP Build, where the skill builder and the agent builder are generally available. The new, managed Joule Studio, announced at Sapphire 2026, is GA rolling out in phases, the status SAP gave at TechEd on 27 October 2026 (SAP TechEd 2026 Innovation News Guide).

The commercial consequence: the classic edition runs on the client's SAP Build and BTP entitlements, so its cost is already inside an existing BTP contract. The new studio's runtime is the one the promotion covers. Before quoting, confirm which edition the tenant actually has and whether the client is among the select customers named in the promotion; SAP has not published that list.

The Joule Studio developer certification is listed by SAP as free until 31 December 2026, which matters for a partner building a team, not for the client's bill.

Decision table: what to budget, by situation

Prototype only, no production traffic — Budget: nothing for design time · Watch: fair-use limits, which SAP does not quantify publicly.

Production agent, customer in the runtime promotion — Budget: model consumption in BTP capacity units until December 2026 · Watch: plan the 2027 runtime line before go-live, not after.

Production agent, customer outside the promotion — Budget: runtime on the BTP commercial model plus model consumption · Watch: the BTP flavour in place, since BTPEA overage is billed at list price.

Agent that calls SAP-delivered Joule Agents — Budget: add actions × 0.02 AI Units · Watch: the AI Units pool expires after twelve months.

A worked example, labelled as ours

Our arithmetic, not an SAP quotation. A procurement agent handles 2,000 requests a month. Each request triggers 4 model calls through the generative AI hub, and the agent hands 1 step per request to an SAP-delivered Joule Agent.

Until December 2026, for a customer in the promotion, the runtime line is zero. The model line is 8,000 calls a month, converted from tokens into capacity units at the rates SAP lists per model in SAP Note 3437766, and priced at the client's BTP contract rate. The Joule Agent line is 2,000 actions × 0.02 = 40 AI Units a month, 480 a year, drawn from the Premium AI pool.

From January 2027 the runtime line appears, on whatever terms SAP publishes by then. SAP has not yet published that rate, so the honest proposal carries the first two lines as figures and the third as a named open item with a re-pricing clause.

What SAP TechEd 2026 added to the picture

TechEd, on 27 and 28 October 2026, framed Joule Studio as the place where customers and partners build on top of a growing SAP catalogue: SAP announced 40 assistants and 300 agents between SAP and its partners (SAP News, 28 October 2026). The agent gateway, through which third-party agents invoke Joule Agents over A2A, is generally available (SAP News, 28 October 2026). Agents built in Joule Studio reading SAP Business Data Cloud data products: GA planned for Q1 2027.

None of this changed a published price. It does change the scoping: an agent that orchestrates existing SAP agents can be cheaper to build and dearer to run, because the runtime is yours but every SAP agent step is billed in AI Units. What we cannot assert

SAP has not published the list of select customers covered by the runtime promotion, the fair-use limits on design time, or the runtime rate that applies after December 2026. Model consumption depends on the model chosen and its token conversion rate in SAP Note 3437766, so we give no euro figure for it.
