SAP AI Units & the SAP Business AI Commercial Model

SAP sells AI in three commercial layers: Base AI, included in every SAP cloud subscription (Joule Base and the AI embedded in the applications); Premium AI, paid in SAP AI Units, which since 2026 is centred on Joule Agents and a few per-request features; and custom-built AI, where design time in Joule Studio is free within fair-use limits and productive runtime is billed as BTP consumption. The AI Unit is the single currency of the Premium layer: bought annually under SKU 8019164 into one shared pool, consumed only when Premium AI performs work, expiring after twelve months. SAP's commercial white paper (version of October 2026) rates a Joule Agent action at 0.02 AI Units for a Standard action and 0.05 for an Advanced action; Joule Assistants carry no separate charge. The decision this forces on every proposal is to budget agents per action, measured in a pilot, and never per user, and to keep the AI Unit pool, the Joule Studio runtime bill and SAP AI Core's capacity units as three separate lines.

What it is

Base AI is what a customer already owns with a cloud subscription: Joule Base (find information, navigate, get in-context guidance) and embedded AI features, with no AI Unit consumption. Activating Joule Base needs a one-time, zero-euro entitlement, SKU 8019544, that accepts SAP's AI terms; customers already holding the AI Unit SKU skip it, and SAP's onboarding guide lists AI Unit SKU 8019164 or Joule Base as the general prerequisite.

Why it matters

• Agents are priced per action, not per user; a business case built on named users under-prices or over-prices by the real action count, which only a pilot measures.
• A multi-agent design multiplies actions by its fan-out; an estimate scaled from a single-agent pilot is wrong by roughly that factor.
• AI Units expire after twelve months; a large multi-year block bought in year one is a write-off risk visible only in SAP for Me.
• Three bills exist side by side: the AI Unit pool, Joule Studio runtime as BTP consumption, and SAP AI Core's capacity units; mixing them hides cost.

• Joule Base needs the zero-euro SKU 8019544 unless AI Units are already held; SAP for Me activates packages and shows balance, consumption and expiry (KBA 3580451).
• SAP AI Core and the generative AI hub are metered in capacity units, not AI Units; the Joule Studio runtime for select customers is free until December 2026.
• Budget per measured action: count actions per completed task across every sub-agent in a pilot before quoting at scale.
