Joule Studio — Classic Edition and the New Intent-Based Studio

What is Joule Studio?

Joule Studio now exists in two forms: the classic edition inside SAP Build (skill builder GA Q2 2025, agent builder GA Q4 2025) and the new Joule Studio announced in May 2026, an intent-based, SAP-managed studio opened from Joule Work, with a jl CLI, a managed runtime, Agent Gateway and embedded n8n.

What it is

Joule Studio is SAP's environment for extending Joule with your own skills, agents and, in its new form, full agentic solutions. The name now covers two products, and knowing which one a customer means is the first question of any engagement. This card covers the product, its editions, access and prerequisites. Why it matters

'Joule Studio' now names two products with different prerequisites, licences and lifecycles; scoping the wrong one wastes the first weeks of a project.
The new studio's licensing (Joule Studio SKU 8021813 plus AI Units or Joule Base on BTPEA/CPEA/PAYG) and SAP-managed provisioning change who must act first: procurement and the SAP for Me administrator.
Free design-time access until the end of 2026 is a window to prototype before commercial terms apply.

The classic edition and the new studio have separate SKUs, roles and provisioning paths — do not assume one subscription covers both.
As of this review (23 September 2026), SAP had not published a GA statement for the new intent-based Joule Studio despite partner commentary targeting a September 2026 release — verify the tenant's own status before committing a go-live date.
SAP's 'Continuous Improvement' terms allow SAP to process customer instructions, configurations, execution logs and feedback from Joule Studio to improve the product — read this before production use with regulated data.
SAP Connect 2026 (SAP News, 5–7 Oct 2026): the new Joule Studio is 'soon to be generally available' (not GA), builds agents from natural language to pro-code with 70+ models and 11,800+ accelerators, and deploys them into Joule Work; performance figures are SAP- and customer-sourced.

Terms used on this page

Joule Studio, classic edition: The original Joule Studio in SAP Build, with skill builder and agent builder, based on SAP Build Process Automation.
Intent-based development: New Joule Studio approach where a described business outcome is turned into requirements, specification, code, tests and deployment.
jl CLI: Command-line interface of the new Joule Studio for pro-code scaffolding, validation, build and deployment of solutions.
Joule Work: SAP's user workspace for Joule assistants and agents; the new Joule Studio is opened from its Develop area.
Agent Gateway: The new Joule Studio's routing layer through which a generated agent calls SAP systems as MCP tools, enforcing principal propagation at runtime.
Solution.yaml: The manifest file describing a new-Joule-Studio pro-code solution's assets (agent, mcp-server, base-ui, vercel-app, data-product, domain-model-extension), validated with `jl solution validate`.
NVIDIA OpenShell (in Joule Studio): The per-agent runtime sandboxing technology SAP's new Joule Studio announcement adds to the managed runtime, distinct from Joule Studio's own governance layer.
Joule Studio Developer / Administrator: The two Cloud Identity Services roles for the new Joule Studio: Developer creates, edits, deploys and monitors own solutions in the non-productive environment only; Administrator sees, deploys and monitors all solutions, including triggering the production GitHub Actions gate.
