SAP AI analytics team skills: the profiles, the gaps, the path

Why it matters now

The skills question was asked openly at SAP TechEd 2026: what the future role of an ABAP developer is in an agentic era, which learning path to take, whether AI replaces IT roles. Sixty-five of the 956 knowledge units touch skills, certification or learning. SAP's standing answer is the free Joule Studio Developer certification campaign (SAP Learning, October to 31 December 2026), picked up in a community how-to post on 5 November 2026; a community post of 3 November 2026 describes how a partner gets Business AI enablement.

Demand data is the hard evidence. In our live SAP analytics adverts with skills on 16 October 2026: Datasphere 33.1 %, SAC 30.1 %, BW 29.1 %, S/4HANA 20.5 %, Business Data Cloud 15.3 %, generative AI 9.1 %, Databricks 6.8 %, Joule 6.7 %, agentic AI 4.1 %, SAP AI Core 1.4 %, AI governance 0.6 %, knowledge graph 0.5 %. The same file lists 739 adverts tagging a generic artificial intelligence skill with no SAP product attached: the buyer knows it wants AI and cannot yet name the profile.

Budgets are selective, not shrinking. The DSAG investment report 2026, on close to 200 companies, found 38 % raising their total IT budget and 43 % raising SAP spend, with about a quarter cutting. A firm that staffs the three missing profiles sells into the 43 %.

Decision guide by situation

SAP customer building an AI centre of excellence — Hire or assign the semantics owner first; it is the profile with the longest learning curve and the one your data products depend on. Buy agent engineering as a service until a second use case exists.

Consulting firm with a BW and SAC practice — Your BW people are the migration asset through 2027-2030; move a third of them onto Datasphere and Business Data Cloud now, and train two per practice on Joule Studio and governance. Do not create an AI practice with no data people in it.

Recruiter — The adverts that say artificial intelligence without a product are your opportunity to qualify: ask the client which of the five profiles they mean. A Joule Studio certification is a signal; Datasphere plus knowledge graph exposure is rarer and worth more.

SAP analytics consultant — Add the agent and governance layers to a data platform base, not instead of it. Our 90-day reskilling module and the expert path are sequenced for that.

ABAP developer — The TechEd question has a practical answer: released APIs, Clean Core, agent tools and MCP servers are ABAP-adjacent work that agent teams need and rarely have.

Options compared

Hire senior profiles from the market — Speed: slow for semantics and governance · Cost: high · Risk: scarce, and the advert may not describe the job.

Reskill BW and SAC consultants — Speed: 90 days to productive on data platform, longer on agents · Cost: training time · Risk: lowest; they know the business data.

Partner with a specialist firm — Speed: fast · Cost: day rates · Risk: knowledge leaves with the partner unless the semantics owner is internal.

Use SAP's own enablement and free certifications — Speed: fast for basics · Cost: low · Risk: vendor view only; governance and grounding practice are not in the exam.

What shipped and what is announced

Available: Joule Studio developer certification (generally available); SAP Business AI Platform solution architect certification (generally available).

Announced, not available: AI Governance Assistant in SAP AI Agent Hub (GA planned for Q4 2026); SAP Knowledge Graph on customer data (GA planned for Q1 2027); TechWolf acquisition (skills layer) (announced, no availability date). A date here is a plan, not a commitment.

Demand that does not yet exist in adverts: AI governance at 0.6 % and knowledge graph at 0.5 % of live adverts. Treat these as leading indicators, not as absence of need; they are what TechEd rooms asked about.

Pitfalls

Hiring an AI team with no data platform people. The agents will have nothing trustworthy to stand on.

Reading the 739 generic AI adverts as demand for prompt engineers. They are demand for someone who can name the profile.

Letting BW specialists leave before 2027. They carry the business logic the data products must preserve.

Treating a certification as readiness. The exams test the vendor's view; grounding, identity and governance are learned on a tenant.

Building a practice on announced products. Announced dates are plans; staff for what is available.

What to do Monday morning

Map your current team against the five profiles; mark each as present, partial or absent.

Name the semantics owner, even part-time, and give them the master data and data product backlog.

Pick two people for Joule Studio and governance training this quarter; the Joule Studio Developer certification is free.

For firms and recruiters: rewrite one open advert to name the profile instead of the word AI, and measure the response.

There is no reliable headcount figure for an SAP AI skills shortage; the numbers in circulation are recruiter estimates and we do not reproduce them. Our advert shares are a snapshot of one dated population, not the whole market. The DSAG report figures are reported by trade press, not read in the report itself.

A semantics and data product owner on Datasphere and Business Data Cloud, not an agent builder; agents without governed data fail in the pilot.

SAP runs a free Joule Studio Developer certification campaign from October to 31 December 2026 (one attempt per learner); SAP Learning journeys are free, exams for other certifications are paid.
