Executive Presence: What It Actually Is

Executive presence weight model: gravitas, communication, and appearance, converging on client trust — architecture diagram for Executive Presence: What It Actually Is, Analytics Legends Academy module M246

As of 2026-08-16

Executive presence splits 67/28/5 across gravitas, communication, and appearance — Sylvia Ann Hewlett's research across 4,000 senior executives says so, and it changes where a consultant spends development time. The decision this module drives: stop performing confidence (deep voice, dramatic pauses, sharper suits) and start building the substance that survives a Chief Architect pushing back on your BDC recommendation in front of the client. At the €1,000+/day tier, presence is a pricing input, not a soft add-on — the consultant a nervous CFO trusts to read the room renews faster and negotiates less.

What you will learn

  • Distinguish genuine executive presence from its common substitutes — performance conventions around voice, posture, or appearance — and concentrate development effort on the three components that actually matter: gravitas (67%), communication (28%), appearance (5%)
  • Identify the specific behavioral markers of gravitas — conviction under challenge, composure in ambiguity, selective silence, and un-performed domain depth — and develop them through deliberate high-stakes exposure
  • Apply the practical communication levers that most directly signal executive presence in client-facing senior forums: conclusion-first structure, specificity over abstraction, controlled answer length, and willingness to name the uncomfortable
  • Use executive presence explicitly as a pricing and positioning input at senior consulting rates in the EMEA SAP analytics market

What Executive Presence Is Not

Before defining what executive presence actually is, it is worth clearing away what it isn't — because consultants waste years chasing the wrong proxies.

It is not a deep voice. Not a particular height or body type. Not a bespoke suit or a specific accent. Not the confident smile held slightly too long. Not the habit of pausing dramatically before speaking. Not performing gravitas by going last in conversations or speaking slowly in meetings to signal that you're thinking deeply.

Most of what gets sold as executive presence — particularly to women and to non-native English speakers working in Anglophone contexts — is a set of performance conventions derived from a fairly narrow demographic of mid-twentieth-century corporate leaders. These conventions can be learned, but they are not presence. Presence is something else. It precedes them and, on its own, often exceeds them.
