The SAP S/4HANA Data Model: Universal Journal (ACDOCA), Business Partner, Material Ledger and Simplified Tables

The SAP S/4HANA Data Model: Universal Journal (ACDOCA), Business Partner, Material Ledger and Simplified Tables — Analytics Legends section illustration for the SAP Analytics knowledge base (concepts, studies, Academy)

As of 2026-10-30

SAP S/4HANA replaced the ECC data model with three structural choices: finance line items in one table (ACDOCA, the Universal Journal), every customer and vendor as a Business Partner (BUT000 plus CVI links), and material documents in MATDOC on top of a mandatory Material Ledger. This module shows how to read, convert and extract that model without breaking reports: which tables stop being the right read path, how the Simplification Item Catalog and Readiness Check scope a project, and how released CDS views feed Datasphere, SAP Business Data Cloud and AI. A lab traces one goods receipt through MATDOC to ACDOCA with reproducible numbers.

What you will learn

  • Explain which ledgers, currencies and sources write to ACDOCA and why FI and CO need no reconciliation.
  • Query MATDOC and ACDOCA for one goods receipt and reconcile quantity and value to the expected totals.
  • Run the CVI pre-check sequence and list the business partner prerequisites for a conversion.
  • Scope a project with the Simplification Item Catalog, SAP Readiness Check and the Simplification Item Check.
  • Design a CDS-based extraction of journal lines into Datasphere with extraction annotation and change data capture.

Concept overview: what changed and why it matters

SAP S/4HANA replaced the ERP data model of SAP ECC, not only its database. Three structural decisions explain most of the table names you meet on a project: finance line items live in one table, ACDOCA (the Universal Journal); every customer and vendor is a Business Partner (BUT000 plus role and link tables); and inventory movements live in one denormalised table, MATDOC, on top of a mandatory Material Ledger. For an analytics person the consequence is practical: the tables you knew (BSEG, COEP, MKPF, MSEG, KNA1, LFA1) are no longer the right place to read, and the released CDS views are.

Figure 1 shows where the finance-side data now lands (ACDOCA, BUT000, MATDOC). The rest of this module follows the same order as a conversion project: Universal Journal, Business Partner, material documents and Material Ledger, a lab that traces one goods receipt through all of them, trade-offs, then what Datasphere, SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) and AI do with the result.

Prerequisites

  • Basic ERP finance and logistics vocabulary (company code, plant, material, G/L account).
  • Read access to a SAP S/4HANA system or the worked dataset in the lab.
  • First contact with CDS views and SAP Datasphere (see M064 and M001).

Outcomes

  • Name the five sources that write to ACDOCA and the field that separates ledgers (RLDNR).
  • Reproduce 960.00 EUR and 80 PC as the inventory balance of the lab dataset from MATDOC and ACDOCA.
  • Identify three reports that break when built on MKPF/MSEG or KNA1/LFA1 and name the replacement read path.
  • Choose between table read, released CDS view, replication flow and data product for a given reporting need.
  • State the status of TechEd 2026 items touching this layer with their sources.
