SAP S/4HANA Embedded Analytics: Analytical Queries, Fiori KPIs and the Limits versus Datasphere and BDC
As of 2026-10-30
Embedded analytics runs operational reporting on the live data of one SAP S/4HANA system through CDS cube and dimension views, analytical queries and Fiori apps such as Manage KPIs and Reports. This module explains the stack, the current analytical projection syntax, the SAC live connection and the replication path to Datasphere. You build a custom analytical query and a KPI with reproducible numbers, then decide with a table when embedded is enough and when history, cross-system joins, data products or AI grounding require Datasphere and Business Data Cloud.
What you will learn
- Explain the three layers of embedded analytics and place cube, dimension and query views in them.
- Write the skeleton of a transient analytical projection view with provider contract ANALYTICAL_QUERY.
- Create and publish a custom analytical query and a KPI in the Fiori apps and reproduce the lab totals.
- Configure the path from a query to the launchpad with catalog, role and space.
- Choose between embedded, SAC live connection and Datasphere replication for a given requirement.
Embedded analytics in 2026
SAP S/4HANA embedded analytics is operational reporting that runs on the live transactional data of the ERP system itself, with no copy, no load window and no separate warehouse. SAP describes three layers: the SAP HANA database at the bottom, the Virtual Data Model (VDM) made of Core Data Services (CDS) views in the middle, and SAP Fiori analytical apps on top; SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) runs behind some of these apps through a live connection (Describing Embedded Analytics, public edition). Users do not log into SAC directly; they open Manage KPIs and Reports → Stories.
What a BW or Datasphere consultant must internalise on Monday: the unit of delivery is a CDS cube or dimension view plus an analytical query on top of it, not a table and not a report program. The query is the multidimensional model (fields, parameters, filters) that every consumer app reuses (Describing Embedded Analytics, private edition).
What changed recently, with dates:
Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of CDS views (see M414).
- Access to an S/4HANA development tenant or sandbox with the Analytics Specialist role.
- Familiarity with SAC models or BW queries.
Outcomes
- Distinguish cube, dimension and analytical query and state what each carries.
- Name the apps used to browse, create and consume queries and KPIs.
- State the requirements of the SAC live connection for on-premise and cloud systems.
- Identify the annotations and containers needed to replicate a CDS view to Datasphere.
- Justify with a table when embedded analytics is insufficient.
