CDS Views and the Virtual Data Model (VDM): Interface, Consumption and Extension

CDS Views and the Virtual Data Model (VDM): Interface, Consumption and Extension — Analytics Legends section illustration for the SAP Analytics knowledge base (concepts, studies, Academy)

As of 2026-10-30

Almost every figure that leaves SAP S/4HANA for a report, a data product or an AI scenario passes through an ABAP CDS view. This module teaches the Virtual Data Model layers, the annotations that steer behaviour, release contracts C0, C1 and C2, access control with DCL, and extension without modification. You read the release state of I_JournalEntryItem, build a custom view entity on it with reproducible totals, and follow an extraction-enabled view into ODP, replication flows and embedded analytics. You leave with a decision ladder for what to build on.

What you will learn

  • Locate I_JournalEntryItem in the SAP Business Accelerator Hub and read its VDM type, release state and extraction annotation
  • Read the API State of a CDS view in ABAP Development Tools and name its contract (C0, C1, C2)
  • Write a CDS view entity with a group by on a released basic view and reconcile its totals
  • Add fields to a view with EXTEND VIEW ENTITY without modifying the base
  • Configure an extraction-enabled view so a Datasphere replication flow can use it

CDS and the VDM in 2026: what they are and where they sit

ABAP Core Data Services (CDS) is the data-modelling layer of every SAP S/4HANA system. A CDS view entity is a modelled, annotated SELECT that lives in the ABAP repository, is evaluated in the SAP HANA database and is read by ABAP SQL, by OData services, by analytical engines and by extraction tools. The Virtual Data Model (VDM) is SAP's naming and layering convention on top of it: the business objects of S/4HANA are exposed as CDS views such as I_JournalEntryItem, which sits above the universal journal table ACDOCA. If you work on analytics, almost every number you extract, report or feed to an AI scenario from S/4HANA passes through a CDS view, so knowing which view to read, whether it is stable and how to extend it is a daily skill.

Prerequisites

  • Basic SQL (select, join, group by)
  • Awareness of the S/4HANA universal journal (ACDOCA) as covered in M413

Outcomes

  • Explain the roles of basic, composite and consumption views and read @VDM.viewType
  • Distinguish release contracts C0, C1 and C2 and apply them to a build decision
  • Reproduce the lab totals 750.00 and -400.00 EUR from the sample data
  • State when extraction fails: missing annotation, release below 1909, AMDP
  • Choose between custom view entity, key-user app, view extension and replication flow
