What is BARC Score — Financial Performance Management (FPM) 2026?

FPM is five interconnected processes, not five departments — a slow close compromises every downstream process, from reporting to disclosure.

Financial Performance Management (FPM) is the discipline that connects an organization's strategic ambitions to its financial outcomes through a continuous, closed-loop cycle of planning, execution, measurement, and course correction. Where traditional management accounting is retrospective — explaining what happened and why — FPM is forward-looking: it exists to ensure resources, decisions, and incentives stay aligned to close the gap between the plan and the emerging reality, and to shorten the time between noticing a gap and acting on it.

Five processes, one connected system

Why it matters

  • If financial close is slow or error-prone, reporting, planning, and disclosure are all compromised downstream — close quality is the foundation, not one line item among five.
  • Modern planning has largely abandoned the annual-budget-only model for rolling forecasts and driver-based models re-run in hours instead of weeks.
  • Disclosure management (XBRL, iXBRL, EDGAR) sits at the intersection of finance, legal, and investor relations and is increasingly regulated.

Key points

  • BARC Score covering full EPM/FPM scope: planning + consolidation + close + reporting.
  • Broader than IP&A Score — includes consolidation specialists.
  • SAP coverage: SAC Planning + Group Reporting + BPC + Finance & Risk Cloud.
  • Competitor field: OneStream, Oracle EPM Cloud, CCH Tagetik, Workday Adaptive, Anaplan, Board.
  • Full visual paywalled.
  • BARC Score — Financial Performance Management (FPM) 2026 is mastered only when it changes a named buyer decision.
  • Start with the semantic contract and control model before demonstrating the tool.
  • Use current SAP, analyst, study, KG, and news signals as evidence, not decoration.
  • Separate verified facts from directional trends and modeled assumptions.
  • Define owner, metric, threshold, support path, and rollback before scaling.

Terms used on this page

Driver-based planning
A planning methodology that models financial outcomes as a function of observable operational drivers (volumes, headcount, capacity, rates) rather than extrapolating prior-year line items — allows rapid re-forecasting when driver assumptions change
Rolling forecast
A forward-looking financial estimate that maintains a fixed horizon (e.g. always 12 months forward) and is updated regularly, so the organisation always has a current forward view regardless of where the fiscal year end falls
ESEF (European Single Electronic Format)
ESMA's regulatory requirement for European listed companies to publish IFRS consolidated financial statements in iXBRL format, enabling machine-readable financial data for regulators and investors
xP&A (Extended Planning and Analysis)
The extension of financial planning to operational domains (workforce, supply chain, sales capacity) so that financial and operational plans are built on the same model and assumptions — SAC supports xP&A through its multi-subject planning models
CO-PA (Controlling-Profitability Analysis)
The SAP module that captures revenue and cost data by profitability segments (product, customer, region, distribution channel) to support margin analysis — the data foundation for the profitability management process in FPM
Continuous close
An operating model in which close activities are distributed throughout the accounting period rather than concentrated at period end, enabled by real-time ledger architecture and pre-close controls
XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language)
A machine-readable standard for tagging financial data to a defined taxonomy, enabling automated regulatory filing and comparative analysis — required for ESEF in Europe and for many SEC filings in the US
