BARC — The Financial Consolidation Survey

What is BARC — The Financial Consolidation Survey?
Consolidation fails silently on three mechanics — scope changes mid-year, unreconciled intercompany balances, and currency translation adjustments booked to OCI, not P&L.
Financial consolidation is the process by which a parent company combines the financial statements of every subsidiary it controls into a single set of group accounts — eliminating intercompany transactions and translating foreign-currency results into one reporting currency. The output, a consolidated income statement, balance sheet and cash-flow statement, is what investors, regulators, auditors and rating agencies actually read; producing it correctly under a tight close calendar is one of the most technically demanding recurring tasks in corporate finance, and it is the domain BARC's Financial Consolidation Survey exists to benchmark.
The Survey gathers ratings from finance professionals who actually run close cycles on the consolidation tools they use in production — much like its sibling BI & Analytics Survey, it is built from named-user experience rather than analyst evaluation, and it scores tools on dimensions that matter specifically to a controllership function: speed and reliability of the close, intercompany reconciliation support, currency translation handling, audit trail quality, and vendor support during go-live.
Why this matters beyond the finance function
Why it matters
- Adding or disposing of an entity mid-year forces partial-period consolidation with date-weighted earnings and step-acquisition accounting — a common source of close delays.
- Unreconciled intercompany balances (a receivable must equal the counterpart's payable exactly) cascade directly into audit findings in groups with hundreds of entities.
- Currency translation uses two different rates — closing rate for the balance sheet, average rate for the income statement — with the gap parked in OCI as a CTA, not profit.
Key points
- BARC user-experience survey for financial consolidation + close.
- SAP coverage: Group Reporting (S/4HANA), BPC Consolidation (legacy), SAC for reporting/disclosure.
- Competitors: OneStream, CCH Tagetik, Workiva, Oracle FCCS.
- Essential reference for S/4HANA Group Reporting RFPs.
- Rankings paywalled.
- BARC — The Financial Consolidation Survey is mastered only when it changes a named buyer decision.
- Start with the semantic contract and control model before demonstrating the tool.
- Use current SAP, analyst, study, KG, and news signals as evidence, not decoration.
- Separate verified facts from directional trends and modeled assumptions.
- Define owner, metric, threshold, support path, and rollback before scaling.
Terms used on this page
- Group Reporting
- SAP's strategic consolidation product (on S/4HANA and BTP) replacing BPC Consolidation for group financial close. Natively integrated with S/4HANA actuals, eliminating intercompany extraction steps.
- CCH Tagetik
- Wolters Kluwer's CPM/EPM suite, specialising in financial consolidation + planning + disclosure. Historically strong in DACH and Nordic markets; competes directly with SAP Group Reporting + BPC in large enterprise consolidation deals.
- OneStream
- US-based EPM vendor that collapses consolidation + planning into one platform — the sharpest direct competitor to SAP's Group Reporting + SAC Planning combination in 2026 enterprise deals.
- Decision owner
- The accountable person who accepts the trade-off and funds the next action.
- Semantic contract
- The shared definition of business terms, metrics, entities, and access rules used by tools and teams.
- Control plane
- The layer that applies policy, access, lineage, monitoring, and escalation across the operating model.
- Evidence grade
- A label that separates verified fact, directional signal, modeled assumption, and field observation.
- Adoption metric
