What is BARC?

Consolidation fails silently on three mechanics — scope changes mid-year, unreconciled intercompany balances, and currency translation adjustments booked to OCI, not P&L.

What it is

Financial consolidation is the process by which a parent company combines the financial statements of every subsidiary it controls into a single set of group accounts — eliminating intercompany transactions and translating foreign-currency results into one reporting currency. The output, a consolidated income statement, balance sheet and cash-flow statement, is what investors, regulators, auditors and rating agencies actually read; producing it correctly under a tight close calendar is one of the most technically demanding recurring tasks in corporate finance, and it is the domain BARC's Financial Consolidation Survey exists to benchmark.

The Survey gathers ratings from finance professionals who actually run close cycles on the consolidation tools they use in production — much like its sibling BI & Analytics Survey, it is built from named-user experience rather than analyst evaluation, and it scores tools on dimensions that matter specifically to a controllership function: speed and reliability of the close, intercompany reconciliation support, currency translation handling, audit trail quality, and vendor support during go-live.

Why it matters

Adding or disposing of an entity mid-year forces partial-period consolidation with date-weighted earnings and step-acquisition accounting — a common source of close delays.
Unreconciled intercompany balances (a receivable must equal the counterpart's payable exactly) cascade directly into audit findings in groups with hundreds of entities.
Currency translation uses two different rates — closing rate for the balance sheet, average rate for the income statement — with the gap parked in OCI as a CTA, not profit.
