What is Integrated Business Planning (IBP)?

IBP is SAP's supply-chain planning suite — demand, supply, inventory, S&OP — integrating with SAC for executive visualization and Datasphere for cross-functional analytics.

What it is

Integrated Business Planning is the discipline of running one plan across demand, supply, finance and operations on a shared set of assumptions, so that a change in one function is visible as a consequence in the others.

Why it matters to an analytics consultant

IBP is where analytics stops being descriptive. A reporting model answers what happened; a planning model must accept writes, hold versions, and survive a room full of people who disagree about the future. The technical consequence is that the model becomes a system of record — auditable, permissioned, and versioned — rather than a projection of one.

The organisational consequence is larger: IBP fails far more often on cadence and ownership than on modelling. A plan nobody is accountable for reverts to a spreadsheet within two cycles.

How it works

Why it matters

  • S&OP is the layer where supply-chain planning and finance actually have to agree on one number — IBP's SAC/Datasphere integration makes that reconciliation visible instead of argued over in meetings.
  • Demand, supply and inventory planning feeding one suite means a change in demand forecast propagates automatically — siloed tools force the manual reconciliation IBP eliminates.
  • The Datasphere integration for cross-functional analytics turns IBP from a planning tool into a source for enterprise-wide reporting.

Key points

  • The supply-chain planning suite — demand, supply, inventory, S&OP.
  • Integrates with SAC for executive visualization and with Datasphere for cross-functional analytics.
  • Classified under Industry Analytics (Advanced) — depth-of-field knowledge, used to anchor rate negotiations.
  • Tagged: foundation — surfaces in the Academy search alongside related tracks.
  • Integrated Business Planning (IBP) is mastered only when it changes a named buyer decision.
  • Start with the semantic contract and control model before demonstrating the tool.
  • Use current SAP, analyst, study, KG, and news signals as evidence, not decoration.
  • Separate verified facts from directional trends and modeled assumptions.
  • Define owner, metric, threshold, support path, and rollback before scaling.
  • For non-AI use cases, still define quality, adoption, and operating ownership.
