What is Joule for ABAP?

"Joule for ABAP" is shorthand: the product is SAP Joule for Developers, ABAP AI capabilities. Since Q2 2026 it is agentic — an ADT MCP Server in Eclipse and VS Code lets coding agents work on ABAP systems — it reaches S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition from release 2021, runs on SAP-ABAP-1 and is priced in AI units.

Names first

There is no SAP product called "Joule for ABAP". SAP's help portal and product pages use SAP Joule for Developers, ABAP AI capabilities for the AI features in ABAP development, and SAP Joule for Developers for the wider family embedded in SAP Build (Build Code, Build Apps, Build Process Automation). ABAP Cloud has been part of the SAP Build portfolio since TechEd 2024, when SAP announced that ABAP Cloud projects can be created and monitored from the SAP Build lobby; the ABAP AI features themselves live in ABAP Development Tools (ADT) for Eclipse and, since 2026, ADT for Visual Studio Code. Three further names complete the picture: SAP-ABAP-1 (SAP's ABAP foundation model), the ADT MCP Server (agentic access), and the ABAP AI SDK powered by Intelligent Scenario Lifecycle Management (for building your own AI features in ABAP).

Why it matters

The official name is SAP Joule for Developers, ABAP AI capabilities — using the right name matters in contracts, entitlements and SAP for Me activation.
Since Q2 2026 ABAP AI is agentic: the ADT MCP Server lets GitHub Copilot, Amazon Q or other MCP-capable agents perform ABAP development tasks in Eclipse and VS Code.
Extension to S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition 2021+ and the switch to AI-unit pricing make ABAP AI relevant to most RISE customers' custom-code migration programmes.
