SAP ABAP MCP server: ADT, RFC and GUI options compared
As of 2026-10-18
For ABAP there are two official servers and two others. SAP's ADT MCP Server runs from ADT for VS Code and is described as experimental; the Eclipse counterpart is a local HTTP server protected by a generated token. A community RFC server calls function modules and states it is not an SAP product, and a vendor server drives the SAP GUI for testing.
The official ones: ADT MCP servers
The ADT MCP Server (ABAP Development Tools for VS Code) runs a local HTTP MCP endpoint so an assistant can carry out ABAP development tasks such as creating packages and activating objects. The tutorial describes it as experimental. It targets ABAP, ABAP Cloud and the SAP BTP ABAP environment.
The ADT MCP Server for Eclipse is its counterpart: a local HTTP server, protected by a generated token, giving agentic workflows access to ABAP development tasks. No status label is given for it in the sources we verified, so do not infer that it is more mature than the VS Code one.
Both are development tools. They sit on top of the ADT connection you already authorise, and they act on ABAP objects, not on business data.
Community and vendor servers
SAP RFC MCP (community, MIT, stdio) connects assistants to SAP over RFC to call function modules and read their metadata. It explicitly says it is not an official SAP product. It is useful for exploration and for wrapping existing function modules, and it is the highest-risk entry here: an RFC call runs under the connecting user's authorisations and a function module can write.
SAP GUI MCP (vendor, MIT, stdio) drives SAP through the desktop GUI scripting API or WebGUI in Chrome. It is aimed at end-to-end testing, visual checks and screenshots, which makes it a testing tool rather than a development or data tool.
Local, not remote
All four are local. The ADT servers expose an HTTP endpoint on the developer machine; the RFC and GUI servers use stdio. Nothing here is a hosted service you connect to. The security question is therefore the credentials in the developer's ADT or RFC connection and what the endpoint accepts: on Eclipse a generated token protects it, and for the VS Code server you should read the documentation for how the local endpoint is protected, since the catalogue does not say.
Choosing
Writing or refactoring ABAP in a modern setup: the ADT server for your IDE. Reading or calling existing function modules from an assistant: the community RFC server, in a sandbox first. Automating a UI test across transactions: the SAP GUI server. Letting an assistant read S/4HANA data without ABAP: the OData route, for example the AWS for SAP MCP Server (a container on Amazon Bedrock AgentCore with OData V2/V4 discovery, reads, optional writes and allow-listing) or the community OData-to-MCP server on BTP.
Check before production
Never connect any of these to a productive system from a developer laptop. Use a development or sandbox system and a dedicated user with narrow authorisations. For the ADT servers, check which actions are exposed (activation and package creation are writes), require a transport request for anything that leaves the sandbox, and keep AI-generated changes in review. For RFC, allow-list the function modules and log calls. Because the VS Code server is experimental, expect tool changes between releases.
Joule and agent platforms
Joule for ABAP and ABAP AI are SAP's embedded assistance, and the ADT servers are how external assistants such as Claude Code or Cursor reach the same ABAP workflow. They are developer tools, not tools for a Joule business agent.
For questions about the ABAP consulting market, Analytics Legends has a separate read-only MCP server with a public tranche for firms, day rates and opportunities.
What we cannot assert
How the VS Code ADT endpoint is protected, and any status label for the Eclipse server, are not stated in the sources we verified (18 October 2026).
Frequently asked
Is there an official SAP ABAP MCP server?
Yes: the ADT MCP Server for VS Code (experimental per its tutorial) and the ADT MCP Server for Eclipse, both local.
Can an assistant call function modules?
Through the community SAP RFC MCP server, which is not an official SAP product. Treat it as a sandbox tool.
Are the ADT servers remote?
No. They run as local HTTP endpoints from your IDE.
Is the SAP GUI MCP server for development?
It is aimed at end-to-end testing, visual checks and screenshots through GUI scripting or WebGUI.
