What is SAP Domain Models (SAP-native foundation models)?

SAP Domain Models are foundation models that SAP trains on its own code, data, metadata, documented best practices and business processes. On 13 May 2026 SAP said they were available through the SAP Early Adopter Care programme with general availability planned for Q3 2026 (not confirmed as of 15 October 2026); on 20 July 2026 it described them as running behind Joule and Joule Studio, not directly exposed to customers. As of 15 October 2026 no general-availability announcement was found, and no customer-facing endpoint is documented.

What SAP means by Domain Models

SAP's product page "SAP Domain Models: Native Foundation Models" describes AI foundation models that SAP trains and keeps updating on its own code, data, metadata, documented best practices and business processes. The contrast SAP draws is with general-purpose models, which learn about SAP only from public text. According to the page (read through search excerpts, because sap.com blocked direct retrieval), the models connect to SAP repositories and metadata, use the SAP Knowledge Graph (C028) to ground outputs, run inside SAP policy guardrails and power Joule (C024), Joule Studio and AI agents.

Treat this as a vendor description. At the time of writing (15 October 2026) the only independent material found on the model family is commentary that repeats SAP's framing; no published benchmark, model card or technical paper for Domain Models was located.

Status and dates: what is actually committed

Three dated SAP statements bound the status.

Why it matters

  • SAP positions Domain Models as the SAP-specific knowledge layer behind Joule, Joule Studio and agents, so what they can and cannot do shapes every standard Joule scenario you propose.
  • Status is split: early adopter access was announced on 13 May 2026 with GA planned for Q3 2026, and no GA confirmation was found by 15 October 2026, so any proposal must say 'planned', not 'available'.
  • They are not exposed directly to customers according to the 20 July 2026 release highlights, which moves the architect's work to data quality, grounding, authorisations and partner-model choice.

Key points

  • SAP Domain Models are foundation models trained and updated by SAP on its code, data, metadata, documented best practices and business processes (SAP product page, via search excerpts).
  • 13 May 2026: available through SAP Early Adopter Care, general availability planned for Q3 2026 (SAP News).
  • 20 July 2026: they run behind Joule and Joule Studio and are not directly exposed to customers; named uses are clean-core extensions for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and SAP Ariba and natural-language queries on customer data (SAP News).
  • No GA announcement and no customer-facing API, model name or version list was found as of 15 October 2026.
  • SAP-RPT (tabular, GA since December 2025 in the Generative AI Hub) and SAP-ABAP-1 (Generative AI Hub documentation, Joule for Developers) are related SAP models, but SAP has not published the exact boundary with Domain Models.
  • Partner LLMs (for example Claude Opus 4.7, GPT 5.4, Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite, per the Q2 2026 highlights) stay available in the Generative AI Hub; SAP frames the two as complementary.
  • TechEd 2026 Berlin lists sessions RA108, RA161 (27 October), ST118, AS209, RA803, AS263 (28 October) and ST103 on the topic.
  • Decide: keep Domain Model dependence out of committed scope until GA, run your own evaluation, and ask SAP in writing about training data and inference location.

Terms used on this page

SAP Domain Models
Foundation models that SAP trains on its own code, data, metadata, best practices and business processes; early adopter status in May 2026, GA planned for Q3 2026.
Native foundation model
SAP's wording for a model trained by the vendor on its own material rather than selected from the third-party catalogue.
SAP Early Adopter Care
SAP programme that gives selected customers early access before general availability.
Generative AI Hub
Component of SAP AI Core that serves partner and SAP models through one governed access layer.
Partner LLM
Third-party large language model (for example from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Mistral) offered through the Generative AI Hub.
SAP-RPT
SAP's relational pretrained transformer for structured business data; a tabular model, not a code or process-knowledge model.
SAP-ABAP-1
SAP model for ABAP code documented in the Generative AI Hub and used by Joule for Developers.
Query model
Term used in TechEd 2026 session AS263 next to Domain Models; not defined in the abstract.
