ChatGPT SAP integration: four routes and when each fits
As of 2026-10-18
ChatGPT does not plug into SAP on its own; you need a bridge, and the choice of bridge matters more than the choice of chat client. Four routes exist: a remote MCP server in front of SAP, the MCP gateway in SAP Integration Suite, SAP's Generative AI Hub for model access inside your own SAP-side applications, and Joule, SAP's own assistant. They solve different problems. Our sources do not document ChatGPT-specific setup steps, so this page covers what the SAP side requires.
Route 1: a remote MCP server
The Model Context Protocol is vendor-neutral: it was donated to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation, co-founded by Anthropic, Block and OpenAI. Any client that speaks MCP can use a server that exposes SAP data as tools. For a chat client such as ChatGPT, the relevant shape is a remote server over streamable HTTP, since a hosted client cannot start a process on your laptop the way a local stdio server needs.
SAP-side examples with HTTP transport are the Integration Suite MCP gateway, the LeanIX hosted endpoint and the AWS for SAP server. Whether a given ChatGPT plan can register a custom connector is a ChatGPT-side question that our sources do not answer; check OpenAI's documentation.
Route 2: the Integration Suite MCP gateway
This is the governed route for business data. An MCP server artifact in SAP Integration Suite exposes APIs, OpenAPI-described endpoints or RFC backends as tools, and the gateway adds authentication, rate limiting and monitoring. It needs the Premium or Enhanced edition and the Integration Cell runtime.
Identity is the reason to choose it. The client obtains a token, the gateway validates it, and a destination carries the user to the backend: principal propagation through Cloud Connector for on-premise S/4HANA, a SAML bearer assertion for S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition. The agent then acts with the user's rights, not a shared account.
Route 3: Generative AI Hub
Generative AI Hub is a different direction. It is a capability of SAP AI Core and SAP AI Launchpad that gives access to, and orchestration of, generative models in a governed runtime on SAP BTP. You use it when you build an application on SAP and want the model call to stay inside SAP's runtime, rather than an external chat client reaching in. It is available only on the AI Core extended plan; a 30-day trial exists. It does not make ChatGPT's interface a front end to SAP, and it is not a substitute for a connector: it governs model access, not data access to your SAP applications.
Route 4: Joule
If the goal is simply an assistant on SAP data and processes, Joule is the SAP-delivered option. Joule Studio lets you attach MCP servers to your own agents, and Joule Work Desktop, for now limited to SAP's Early Adopter Care programme, can register a server deployed on the Integration Cell runtime. Choosing Joule means staying inside SAP's licensing and support perimeter; choosing ChatGPT means a third-party client plus a bridge that you design, secure and own. Compare the two on identity, audit and support, not on model quality, which our sources do not measure.
Check the API policy first
SAP's API policy, in the version we reviewed, restricts the use of SAP APIs by AI systems that plan and execute API calls, except through SAP-endorsed pathways. The pathways named in trade-press analysis are the Integration Suite MCP gateway, SAP-provided servers through Joule Studio and the A2A protocol. A direct connector from a chat client to an OData service, or a community server, falls outside, and SAP had not published terms for agentic API access. This applies whichever model vendor you use. Get the licensing owner to read it before the pilot.
Which route fits
Employees asking questions about SAP business data — Route: Integration Suite MCP gateway behind whichever client your policy allows, or Joule.
Developers writing ABAP, CAP or UI5 — Route: SAP's development servers, which list several third-party coding agents as documented clients; these are local servers.
A custom SAP application that calls a model — Route: Generative AI Hub.
Market and day-rate questions, not SAP system data — Route: a public remote MCP server, such as ours at https://analyticslegends.ai/mcp, read-only.
What we cannot assert
ChatGPT-specific connector setup, plan availability and limits are not covered by our sources and change often. SAP's commercial terms for agentic API access were not published.
Frequently asked
Can ChatGPT read data from SAP S/4HANA?
Not natively. It needs a bridge, most defensibly an MCP server behind the Integration Suite gateway with per-user identity. Whether your ChatGPT plan can use a custom remote connector is for OpenAI's documentation to answer.
Is Generative AI Hub the same as ChatGPT integration?
No. It gives SAP-side applications governed access to generative models inside AI Core. It does not turn an external chat interface into an SAP front end.
Does SAP allow third-party AI to call its APIs?
Under the API policy version we reviewed, only through SAP-endorsed architectures or service-specific pathways when the AI plans and chains API calls. Read the current policy text and ask your SAP contact.
Which route is safest to start with?
Read-only, per-user identity, a sandbox tenant and a named owner. For code work, SAP's local development servers carry the least data risk.
