Building Consulting IP
As of 2026-08-16
Consulting IP is what turns a linear day-rate business into a leveraged one: a methodology, template, or tool built once and resold across engagements multiplies the value of the hours behind it — the worked example in this module shows a 15-day SAC template library returning roughly an 8:1 leverage ratio (125 reusable delivery days from 15 days invested). The Week-1 decision is which of the four IP types — methodology framework, accelerator template, benchmark data set, or automation tool — to build first, and whether to fund it from billable time or unbilled investment. The trap that erases the economics: reusing a client-funded, client-owned deliverable (which belongs to the client under a standard IP-assignment clause) instead of extracting the generic methodology layer that is legally and commercially the consultant's to resell. Get this right and IP becomes the reason a consultant can charge €1,400/day instead of €800/day for the same calendar time — the tool does not just save hours, it changes what the day rate is paying for.
What you will learn
- Identify which of the four consulting-IP types — methodology, template, benchmark, tool — fits a recurring client problem.
- Build and validate a reusable framework (e.g. a Datasphere readiness assessment) against two real client engagements.
- Separate client-owned deliverables from consultant-owned methodology under a standard IP-assignment clause.
- Price and package IP as a facilitated engagement, not a stand-alone download, to protect margin and defensibility.
Module overview
Building consulting intellectual property (IP) is the activity that distinguishes a consulting practice from a consulting job. A consultant who trades exclusively time and expertise for money has a linear business: revenue scales only with hours worked. A consultant who builds reusable IP — methodology frameworks, tool templates, benchmark data sets, automation scripts, proprietary assessment tools — creates leverage: a single hour spent developing a reusable deliverable can be resold across twenty client engagements. In the SAP analytics consulting market, where the underlying technology (Datasphere, BDC, SAC) is evolving rapidly but the business problems being solved (how to report faster, how to reduce data preparation effort, how to make analytics consumable by executives who do not read raw data) are structurally recurring, the opportunity to build durable consulting IP is substantial.
