Joule adoption and value: deciding in late 2026

Why it matters now

Joule was the second most discussed subject at SAP TechEd 2026: 248 of the 956 knowledge units and 127 of the 531 audience questions. The questions were adoption questions: the difference between Joule Studio inside Joule Work and the stand-alone Joule Studio 2.0; whether Joule reaches on-premise systems; what happens to skills built on the classic edition; why a knowledge-graph question in Business Data Cloud has to pass through SAC insights.

SAP's own signal is commercial. In its quarterly statement of 21 October 2026, SAP reported a current cloud backlog of EUR 24.1 billion, up 28 %, and said nine of its fifty largest deals of the quarter included AI and Business Data Cloud offerings. SAP does not break out Joule usage or revenue, so adoption evidence is qualitative: named customers and deal counts.

The value question is therefore a cost question in disguise: what does a completed step cost, and what did it replace?

Decision guide by situation

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition — You have Joule base already. Pick one process with measurable steps (approvals, exceptions, closing tasks), activate the delivered agents for it, and count completed steps per week.

S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition or RISE — Joule reaches you through BTP and the Cloud Connector; several TechEd features were asked about and answered with roadmap language. Confirm the feature list for your edition before promising it to the business.

ECC or BW on-premise only — Embedded Joule is not delivered there as standard; at Sapphire in May 2026 SAP said most Joule assistants and agents would be opened to ECC and on-premise S/4HANA for customers committed to RISE with a Max Success Plan, and TechEd answers kept the focus on cloud ERP agents. Without that commitment, AI reaches you through side-by-side services on BTP under the SAP API policy. Scope accordingly, and read our page on on-premise landscapes.

Consulting firm — Joule for Consultants is a partner product with its own commercial model; the value is in delivery hours, and it must be bought and rolled out as a tool, not a licence line.

Consultant — The free Joule Studio Developer certification (SAP Learning campaign, October to 31 December 2026) is a cheap entry; the paid value is in grounding, identity and change management, which are the parts customers cannot buy from SAP.

Options compared

Joule base — Cost: included in cloud subscriptions · Value: navigation, Q&A, in-context help · Measure: time to find, support tickets avoided.

SAP-delivered agents — Cost: AI Units per action, 0.02 standard and 0.05 advanced in SAP's white paper of October 2026 · Value: steps executed · Measure: completed steps, rework rate.

Custom agents in Joule Studio — Cost: build effort plus AI Units · Value: a process SAP has not covered · Measure: cycle time of the process, not the agent.

Joule Work — Cost: AI Units and seats depending on package · Value: a personal workspace across applications · Measure: adoption by role, not by login.

No Joule, rules or classic ML instead — Cost: lowest · Value: predictable · Measure: the same, which is how you know whether the agent earned its place.

What shipped and what is announced

Available: Joule copilot across the SAP estate (generally available); 20+ Joule Assistants · 200+ Joule Agents (generally available); Joule Studio (GA rolling out in phases); Joule Work — rollout to all customers (rolling out, Q4 2026); Joule for Consultants (generally available); SAP-RPT-TS (generally available); SAP-RPT-Decisions (generally available).

Announced, not available: SAP Knowledge Graph on customer data (GA planned for Q1 2027); SAP Enterprise AI Gateway (GA planned for Q1 2027); Design and run n8n workflows in Joule Studio (GA planned for Q1 2027); AI Governance Assistant in SAP AI Agent Hub (GA planned for Q4 2026). A date here is a plan, not a commitment.

Ending: the orchestration service version 1 closes on 31 December 2026 (SAP What's New, 3 November 2026). A TechEd question also referred to generative AI in the classic Joule Studio edition ending at the same date; confirm that date in your own SAP notes before planning the migration of existing skills.

Pitfalls

Measuring conversations. A thousand chats prove curiosity; completed process steps prove value.

Piloting on a public-cloud demo tenant for a private-edition customer. The feature list differs and the business remembers the demo.

Buying AI Units before the metric exists. The pool expires after twelve months; an unused pool is the most visible failure of an AI programme.

Leaving grounding and identity for phase two. The pilot answers wrongly or over-broadly, and trust does not come back for phase two.

Selling Joule as a licence line in a proposal. The customer owns the base already; your fee is for the process, the grounding and the change.

What to do Monday morning

Write down which Joule layer each business unit already owns under its current subscription.

Choose one process and define the completed-step metric with the process owner; agree the baseline this week.

Check the edition and landscape of the target system against SAP's feature availability for that edition.

If skills exist on the classic Joule Studio edition, open the migration item now with the 31 December 2026 date on it.

Price the pilot in AI Units with the published rates and a cap, then read our module on change management and Joule adoption.

What we cannot assert

SAP publishes no Joule adoption or usage figure; vendor-reported development-time figures after TechEd are not customer measurements. We cannot confirm from a primary source the end date of generative AI in the classic Joule Studio edition; it appeared as a question from the audience.

Is Joule free?

The base assistant is included in SAP cloud subscriptions. Agents, Joule Studio runtime and Joule Work capabilities are paid in AI Units or per-user packages; the published rates are in our Joule pricing guide.

Does Joule work on S/4HANA on-premise?

Not as the embedded product. Private Edition customers reach Joule through BTP and the Cloud Connector with a feature list that differs from public cloud; ECC on-premise customers get AI through side-by-side services, unless they meet the conditions of SAP's May 2026 announcement for ECC and on-premise S/4HANA: most of the landscape committed to RISE, under a Max Success Plan.

How many customers use Joule?

SAP does not publish a usage figure. Its 21 October 2026 statement gives deal counts and named customers, which is qualitative evidence.

What is the difference between Joule Studio and Joule Work?

Joule Work is the end-user workspace across applications; Joule Studio is the build environment for skills and agents, now integrated with Joule Work and also offered stand-alone. Both reached general availability in phases in late 2026.
