Professional Liability Insurance (RC Pro)

RC Pro coverage and claim architecture: coverage stack showing the SI or client minimum versus the portage-group cap, and the four-step claim lifecycle under a claims-made policy — architecture diagram for Professional Liability Insurance (RC Pro), Analytics Legends Academy module M175

Every statement of work you sign puts your personal assets on the line the moment something goes wrong -- a bad data mapping, a failed month-end close, a wrong number in a board pack. RC Pro (Professional Indemnity / E&O) transfers that risk to an insurer, and the market has already set the price of entry: tier-1 SIs typically require EUR 1M per occurrence / EUR 2M aggregate, and direct enterprise clients often demand EUR 2M. Portage-salarial group policies frequently cap at EUR 500K and exclude IP disputes, leaving a gap you must close before signing. For a solo consultant billing EUR 150K-300K, the realistic premium is EUR 800-2,500/year -- roughly 0.5-1.4% of revenue -- the price of qualifying for missions a EUR 500K-capped consultant cannot take. The two things that actually decide a claim are notification speed and documentation; both are free.

What you will learn

  • Identify the minimum coverage levels demanded by SIs, end-clients, and portage agreements in EMEA and negotiate from that baseline
  • Read a policy schedule and locate the exclusions that matter most for SAP implementation work: IP disputes, data loss, subcontracting chains
  • Calculate the realistic cost of RC Pro relative to your TJM and understand how claims history, revenue, and project type drive the premium
  • Manage a claim professionally -- from the first incident notification to settlement -- without inadvertently voiding coverage

Why RC Pro is non-negotiable for an independent SAP consultant

The moment you sign a statement of work, your personal assets are at risk. A SAP BW migration that corrupts financial reporting data for a listed company, a Datasphere configuration that causes a month-end close to fail, an analytics dashboard that feeds incorrect figures into a board decision -- any of these can produce a claim that dwarfs a year of consulting fees. RC Pro (Responsabilite Civile Professionnelle), known internationally as Professional Indemnity (PI) or Errors & Omissions (E&O) insurance, transfers that risk to an insurer. Without it, you absorb it personally.

This is not a legal analysis. Tax, legal, and insurance decisions are jurisdiction-specific. Consult a broker or insurer who specialises in IT consultants for your actual policy; this module gives you the conceptual framework to have that conversation as a peer, not as a buyer who does not understand what they are buying.
