Financial Close in SAP S/4HANA — Advanced Financial Closing, Intercompany Reconciliation and Close Analytics
As of 2026-10-31
The period-end close is a dependency graph, not a checklist. This module separates the accounting content (foreign currency valuation, accruals, depreciation, intercompany matching posting into ACDOCA) from its orchestration with SAP Advanced Financial Closing: templates, generated task lists, offsets, dependency types, critical path. You build a six-task template on paper, compute the critical path and the 5-workday duration, and learn where analytics and AI plug in: close KPIs in Datasphere and SAC, Joule for Finance, and the accruals agent, with availability to be checked per edition.
What you will learn
- Model a close as a task list template with process-related dependencies and planned durations in workdays
- Compute the forward pass, backward pass, float and critical path for a six-task close by hand
- Configure the generation offset and key date logic of Manage Closing Task Lists
- Order ICMR matching rules from strict to tolerant and turn unassigned items into assigned work
- Define four close KPIs and their source objects for a Datasphere and SAC layer
Concept overview
A financial close in SAP S/4HANA is two different things that are often sold as one: the accounting content (valuation, accruals, depreciation, intercompany matching, all posting into the universal journal ACDOCA) and the orchestration that sequences, assigns and monitors those steps. In 2026 the orchestration is handled by SAP Advanced Financial Closing (AFC), a cloud-based task-list product whose user guide describes templates, generated task lists and a "Financial Closing" workflow built from the apps Manage Closing Task Lists, Process Closing Tasks and Approve Closing Tasks (SAP Help — Financial Closing). The older, on-premise Financial Closing cockpit still exists and is documented separately (SAP Help — SAP S/4HANA Financial Closing). Which of the two you get depends on the edition and on what the client licensed; check the edition's SAP Help before promising a feature.
What a practitioner needs to hold in mind:
Prerequisites
- Working knowledge of the S/4HANA general ledger and the universal journal ACDOCA (see M423)
- Basic project scheduling vocabulary: predecessor, duration, float
Outcomes
- Reproduce the lab result: 5 workdays, critical path T4 → T5 → T6, floats 2/1/1 for T1/T2/T3
- Explain how a deactivated task changes dependencies at generation
- Distinguish critical path from longest path as SAP Help defines them
- Place foreign currency valuation after depreciation and accruals in the dependency graph and justify it
- Specify the data needed for days-to-close and on-time task rate
