From copilot to agent

A copilot answers a question in one turn. A Joule agent pursues a task over several steps: it plans, chooses tools, calls them, checks results and stops when the task is done or its step budget is exhausted. SAP's BDC product page describes role-based Joule agents that "draw on SAP Business Data Cloud's knowledge core", combine business context with more than 1,300 prebuilt skills, connect to shared business definitions to hand off tasks, and run on governed data with lineage, access controls and monitoring built in. The data layer is what separates an agent that can be trusted with a finance task from a demo.

What SAP announced for BDC (May 2026)

At Sapphire 2026 SAP described Joule agents inside the business data fabric in four areas:

1. Data product search and creation — find relevant SAP and third-party sources in natural language, apply joins and transformations, apply business context and governance policies.
2. Automated planning and analytical modelling — generate analytical and planning models from dimensions, granularity and sources; start planning cycles, manage versions and apply calculations.
3. Business insights — answer complex analytical questions across lines of business, powered by governed data products in BDC and SAP Knowledge Graph.
4. SAP Analytics Cloud story generation — turn models, queries and business context into dashboards, then continue the conversation to drill into KPIs and drivers.

Check availability per capability and region in the customer's tenant before committing it to a plan; the announcement is not a release note.

Why it matters

• SAP positions Joule agents on BDC's knowledge core as the way agentic AI reaches governed business data — four BDC agent areas were announced in May 2026.
