What is Joule Assistants?

Joule Assistants are role-aligned AI coordinators that SAP positions between the user and the Joule Agents that execute work; SAP's Sapphire release (12 May 2026) speaks of more than 50 of them across the SAP Autonomous Suite orchestrating over 200 agents. Documented so far: SAP press releases, a product page and SAP Learning lessons for the Financial Closing and Sourcing Assistants. Per-assistant GA dates and a help.sap.com chapter are not published, and the TechEd 2026 catalogue (ST112, AS260, AS264) adds descriptions only.

Status first: what is sourced and what is only in the catalogue

Joule Assistants are documented by SAP in press releases, a product page, SAP Learning lessons and use-case pages, but not (as of 16 October 2026) in a help.sap.com chapter of their own: the SAP Help "Joule Capabilities" guide dated 14 October 2026 contains no section on assistants. The sourced core of this card is therefore marketing and learning material, not configuration documentation. The SAP TechEd 2026 catalogue adds session descriptions (ST112, ST111, AS260, AS264, JW300, JW301 and others); those are descriptions, not product announcements, and anything that rests only on them is marked preview below. No general-availability (GA) date for "Joule Assistants" as a family is published in the sources reviewed.

What SAP says a Joule Assistant is

SAP Learning defines Joule Assistants as "role-aligned AI systems that act as expert teammates". They sit between the user and the agents that do the work behind the scenes, are built around one business role or function, and know that role's workflows, decisions, data and available agents. The SAP product page for Joule Agents and Joule Assistants says the same thing more briefly: assistants use role and process context to coordinate Joule Agents and run multi-step work across the business, and the user describes the goal in natural language.

Why it matters

Assistants are the layer where SAP sells 'expert depth' per business role (finance close, sourcing, supply chain), so proposals that say 'Joule' without naming the assistant, its agents and its status are underspecified.
The portfolio claim (more than 50 assistants over more than 200 agents, 12 May 2026) is future-tense and undated, while individual assistants are at different stages: pilot, early deployment, planned Q4 2026 GA.
Assistant, agent and skill are different layers with different owners, risks and licences; mixing them is the commonest way to over-promise on Joule.
TechEd sessions ST112, ST111, JW300 and JW301 (27-28 Oct) will describe how Joule invokes assistants and how they connect over A2A and MCP; this card marks those parts preview until SAP publishes.
