What is Joule in SAP Analytics Cloud?

Generative AI in SAC rests on Just Ask — a natural-language engine over indexed SAC or Datasphere models that also powers Joule's analytical insights — plus a set of AI-assisted features; answer quality is decided by model semantics, synonyms and rules, not by the LLM.

What it is

"Joule in SAP Analytics Cloud" is not one feature but three layers that are easy to confuse:

Just Ask — SAC's natural-language query engine. A user types a question; Just Ask searches the indexed metadata of the allowed models, builds a query, runs it with the user's rights and returns cards (chart by default, switchable to a table).
Joule analytical insights — the same Just Ask engine consumed from Joule, so that a user working in another SAP product can ask an analytical question and get an answer from SAC-indexed models. The Joule integration guide is explicit: these setup steps "do not make Joule itself available in SAP Analytics Cloud"; they expose SAC's analytics to Joule elsewhere. SAP's reference architecture states the capability is part of the Joule Base entitlement.
AI-assisted features — generative helpers inside SAC workflows: AI-assisted calculations (generate and explain formulas in the data analyzer), chart summary in the PowerPoint add-in, commenting (summarise, rephrase), data actions (generate advanced-formula scripts or comments), data action documentation, Prompt Insights (a story widget combining planning data with real-time web search through an LLM) and story code generation (QRC3/2026, generates story scripts from a plain-language request; SAP describes it as a Base AI feature).

Smart Insights and Smart Predict remain in the same help chapter but are classical ML and statistics, not generative AI.

Why it matters

Just Ask is the engine behind both SAC's natural-language search and Joule's analytical insights — model the semantics once and both surfaces improve; neglect it and both fail.
Answer quality is governed by administrator settings (synonyms, Show in search, query defaults, rules) and by the readiness-check findings, which turns 'AI accuracy' into a modelling deliverable a consultant can own.
The Joule analytical-insights wiring has hard constraints — one SAC tenant per formation, three free OAuth client slots, SAP Build Work Zone since release 2506 — that break projects scoped as a simple switch-on.
