Joule in SAP Analytics Cloud — Just Ask & generative analytics

"Joule in SAP Analytics Cloud" names three different things, and most scoping errors come from treating them as one: Just Ask, the natural-language query engine inside SAC; Joule analytical insights, the same engine consumed from Joule in other SAP products, which does not put Joule inside SAC; and the AI-assisted features embedded in SAC workflows (calculations, commenting, data actions, chart summary, Prompt Insights, story code generation). All three are shipped and documented in SAP Help (release 2026.15). What is not shipped is agentic planning: SAP Enterprise Planning with embedded Joule Agents was announced at Sapphire 2026 and has no SAP availability date confirmed as of 6 November 2026. The decision that matters is not which LLM SAP uses but which models to index and how well they are modelled, because Just Ask's answer quality is decided by model semantics, synonyms and rules.

What it is

Just Ask lets a user type a question; the engine searches the indexed metadata of the models an administrator has enabled, builds a query, runs it with the user's own rights and returns cards (a chart by default, switchable to a table). It works on acquired SAC models the administrator has added, or on SAP Datasphere models; for the latter, the administrator needs READ on the Datasphere connection objects and every user needs a Datasphere account with read access to the space and the model, and is prompted to sign in when Just Ask loads. Search input is supported in US English, Spanish, Italian and German, not French.

Why it matters

• Three different things share the name; a proposal that promises Joule inside SAC when the customer licensed analytical insights sells the wrong product.
• Just Ask answers are only as good as the indexed model: dates as text, duplicate names and technical measures produce random-looking answers that get blamed on the LLM.
• The Joule integration has hard prerequisites (one SAC tenant per formation, SAP Build Work Zone since 2506, three free OAuth client slots) that decide the plan before any modelling.
• Agentic planning in SAC is roadmap: SAP has confirmed no date, and agents will be metered in AI Units while Just Ask is Joule Base.
