What is Joule Inside Business Data Cloud?

For data professionals, AI in BDC shows up in three layers: Joule in SAP Datasphere (base feature, generally available per SAP's Q1 2026 highlights, informational, navigational and transactional tasks for admins and space managers), premium AI features in the catalog and modelling tools (content generation for catalog, AI-assisted search, semantic generation for non-SAP sources) and Joule agents announced in May 2026 for data products, modelling, insights and SAC stories. Knowing which layer a feature belongs to decides licensing, setup and adoption.

Three layers of AI in the data professional's day

Prospects often ask what they get from AI in Business Data Cloud beyond a lakehouse. The honest answer separates three layers with different maturity, licensing and setup.

1. Joule in SAP Datasphere (base). SAP's Q1 2026 release highlights list Joule in Datasphere as generally available: data professionals accomplish informational, navigational and transactional tasks through conversation. The SAP setup guide describes the patterns concretely:

Informational — questions about the tenant (for example how many spaces are locked, which users hold a role) and product questions answered from SAP documentation.
Navigational — Joule returns buttons that take the user to the right place in Datasphere.
Transactional — Joule performs actions such as adding users to a space or creating models.

The first scope targets administrators and space managers; SAP states that coverage of data-modelling tasks will grow.

2. Premium AI features in the tools. The SAP Discovery Center lists Datasphere features consumed on the premium tier: content generation for catalog (business descriptions, terms, KPIs and auto-tagging), AI-assisted search (natural-language search in Datasphere) and semantic generation (business semantics for non-SAP sources). They sit where the work happens — the catalog, search, modelling — rather than in a separate AI tab.

3. Joule agents in the business data fabric (announced May 2026). Data product search and creation, automated planning and analytical modelling, business insights grounded in data products and SAP Knowledge Graph, and SAP Analytics Cloud story generation (details in C183; SAC-specific Joule features in C335).

Why it matters

Base features (Joule in Datasphere) and premium AI features (catalog content generation, AI-assisted search, semantic generation) are licensed differently — demos and scopes must say which is which.
Joule in Datasphere needs concrete setup (Cloud Identity Services, formations, DW Joule Consumer role, Work Zone provisioning) that is often underestimated.
Separating assistance (layers 1–2) from autonomy (agents) keeps adoption and control plans realistic.
