Time Series & Advanced Dimensions

Time-dimension maturity stack from raw date to dual fiscal calendar, with the advanced dimension patterns applied on top — architecture diagram for Time Series & Advanced Dimensions, Analytics Legends Academy module M025

As of 2026-08-16

Time intelligence belongs in the Datasphere model, not the SAC story. Four maturity levels: calendar → standard hierarchy → fiscal hierarchy → dual calendar. Advanced patterns: SCD2 on cost-center/employee (only when history is queried), pre-computed date dimension with all attributes, hierarchical views (SAC native), ragged hierarchy flatten-to-leaf. Fiscal calendar confirmation is mandatory pre-engagement. Dual fiscal calendar expertise → +15-20% day-rate premium.

What you will learn

  • Design a Datasphere date dimension table with fiscal and Gregorian calendar attributes for a real engagement
  • Apply SCD2 only where history is genuinely queried, documenting the decision in an ADR
  • Configure hierarchical views in Datasphere so SAC stories inherit time intelligence without story-level formulas
  • Audit an existing SAC story and migrate story-level fiscal YTD formulas to the analytic model layer

Module overview

Time series and advanced dimensions are the mechanics that turn a flat fact table into a temporal intelligence layer — the difference between "revenue this quarter" and "revenue this quarter vs same period last year, forecast trend, and seasonality-adjusted variance." A senior consultant designs time intelligence into the model, not as a story-level patch. Junior failure: adding YTD via a SAC restricted measure on every chart. Senior craft: defining the time dimension correctly in the Datasphere analytic model so every downstream story inherits YTD, PYTD, rolling 12-month, and variance automatically.

Prerequisites

  • Intermediate hands-on experience on SAP analytics projects
  • Review core concepts first: C008, C083, C079

Outcomes
