What is Autonomous Enterprise?

The Autonomous Enterprise is SAP's strategy launched at Sapphire 2026: a Business AI Platform (context, build, governance layers), an Autonomous Suite of domain assistants and agents, and data moves (Reltio, Dremio) so agents act on trusted data. Its constraint is readiness: SAPinsider finds 74% of customers pre-production and SAP's CEO says ~60% of the base is not yet in the cloud.

The Autonomous Enterprise is the strategic thesis SAP unveiled at SAP Sapphire in Orlando in May 2026: business processes increasingly executed by AI agents that act on governed business data, with people setting goals, approving consequential decisions and governing the agents. What SAP actually announced

SAP's Sapphire 2026 press release describes a unified SAP Business AI Platform and deeper partnerships with Anthropic, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft, NVIDIA and Palantir, plus ecosystem partners including Accenture, Mistral AI, Cohere, n8n, Parloa and Conduct. The keynote recap describes the platform as combining SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP Business Data Cloud and AI Foundation, organised in three layers:

Context layer: knowledge graphs, SAP Domain Models and Business Data Cloud, so agents reason with business semantics rather than raw tables.
Build layer: the new Joule Studio (C113).
Governance layer: SAP AI Agent Hub on SAP LeanIX, for SAP and non-SAP agents (C211).

On top, the SAP Autonomous Suite spans five domains with more than 200 agents and over 50 Joule Assistants "available in the coming months" (C265), and a new user experience, Joule Work, with MCP and A2A support. SAP's CEO framed the ambition around reliability: "For the mission-critical processes of our customers, 'almost right' just isn't good enough."

It is the frame SAP uses for every 2026–2027 conversation; consultants need to separate the announced vision from what is available and deployable.
The thesis depends on data readiness, which is why SAP bought Reltio and Dremio: data work is the precondition, not a side project.
Readiness figures (74% pre-production, ~60% of the base not in the cloud) are the realistic baseline for sizing adoption programmes.

SAP-reported at Connect: 20+ Joule Assistants and 200+ Joule Agents created since Sapphire, 400+ agents targeted by year-end, and over 20% productivity gains in HR, finance and procurement at SAP itself.
