What is Knowledge Core?

"Knowledge core" is SAP's 2026 name for the role of SAP Business Data Cloud: the central layer of the business data fabric that connects data, processes, policies, simulations and semantics so that agents understand how the business works. Concretely it is assembled from SAP-managed data products, the semantic layer, SAP Knowledge Graph, HANA Cloud as the AI database, master data (MDG, Reltio) and zero-copy sharing — not a separate product with its own SKU.

What SAP means by "knowledge core"

The phrase appears in SAP's own product language in 2026. The SAP Business Data Cloud page describes the knowledge core as the central layer of a business data fabric that connects data, processes, policies, simulations and semantics into a unified system, so that AI agents understand how the business actually works; role-based Joule agents "draw on SAP Business Data Cloud's knowledge core". The Sapphire 2026 BDC announcement calls BDC the data foundation of the SAP Business AI Platform — the business data fabric that anchors universal business context and serves as the trusted knowledge core for every enterprise application and agent. A BDC product session at Sapphire framed the year's investments along two axes, the data fabric and the knowledge core: data products, a strong semantic layer and knowledge-graph capabilities, so that enterprise data is not just available but understandable.

Treat it as an architectural role, not a SKU. You cannot buy "Knowledge Core"; you implement it with BDC components.

Why it matters

SAP now describes BDC itself as the trusted knowledge core for every application and agent — the phrase anchors the 2026 data-for-AI sales narrative.
The knowledge core is assembled from verifiable components (data products, semantics, SAP Knowledge Graph, HANA Cloud, MDG/Reltio, zero-copy sharing); scoping must name them, not the slogan.
Owning semantics and access centrally is also a concentration risk, which analysts flagged in May 2026.
