SAP Reltio — AI-ready master data in SAP Business Data Cloud, and what it means for SAP Master Data Governance (MDG)

What is SAP Reltio?

SAP announced on 27 March 2026 that it would acquire Reltio, a cloud-native master data management (MDM) vendor, and closed the deal on 7 May 2026 (US$1,259 million, mostly cash, per SAP's Q2 statement). SAP now sells SAP Reltio in SAP Business Data Cloud, stated as generally available in the SAP Connect 2026 innovation news guide, and positions it as complementary to SAP Master Data Governance: Reltio unifies SAP and non-SAP records, MDG keeps governance at the SAP source. SAP has published no MDG-to-Reltio migration or coexistence roadmap.

Three dates, three different statuses

Do not collapse this story into "SAP bought Reltio". It has three milestones with different evidentiary weight.

27 March 2026, announced. SAP and Reltio announced an agreement under which SAP acquires Reltio Inc. Terms were not disclosed, closing was expected in Q2 or Q3 2026 subject to customary conditions including regulatory approvals, and SAP said Reltio would become a core capability of SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) while remaining available as a standalone offering "for the foreseeable future".
7 May 2026, closed. SAP's newsroom confirmed completion. The price appeared later: SAP's Q2 2026 quarterly statement (23 July 2026) reports consideration of US$1,259 million (EUR 1,076 million), mostly in cash, and allocates Reltio to the Applications, Technology & Support segment because the platform is intended to become a core BDC capability.
SAP Connect 2026 (5-7 October 2026), generally available. The SAP Connect innovation news guide states "SAP Reltio is generally available now", offered in SAP Business Data Cloud. The page carries no separate day stamp, so cite it as "stated in the Connect 2026 innovation news guide", not with a precise GA day.

Why it matters

AI agents act on entities; if the same supplier exists five times, the agent acts on the wrong one. SAP has bought its way into entity resolution across SAP and non-SAP data.
Every SAP MDG client now has a legitimate strategic question, but SAP says Reltio is complementary and has published no migration or end-of-life date; plan on evidence, not rumour.
The deal is closed (7 May 2026) and stated generally available at SAP Connect 2026, so it is a purchasable product with unpublished pricing, not a roadmap promise.
