What is LeanIX AI-Assisted BTP Discovery?

The number that matters is 40-80 — that's how many previously unknown shadow-application integrations LeanIX's auto-discovery typically surfaces in a large enterprise within the first 90 days.

LeanIX is an enterprise architecture and technology-portfolio-management platform SAP acquired in November 2023. Its core job, independent of any AI layer, is unglamorous but essential: keep a continuously current map of what applications exist in an organisation, what they talk to, which business capabilities they support, and what stage of their lifecycle they are in. Since the acquisition, SAP has positioned LeanIX as the discovery and landscape-intelligence layer for BTP transformation programmes, and has added an AI layer on top that reads the landscape to recommend BTP adoption paths, migration priorities, and retirement candidates.

The problem it solves

In an SAP context, LeanIX exists to close the brownfield migration blind spot. Organisations starting an S/4HANA or Business Data Cloud programme typically carry 200 to 1,500 applications in their estate, and somewhere between 15% and 30% of those are not properly known to the IT steering committee — shadow integrations built by a business unit, point solutions nobody documented, connections that only show up in network traffic. A migration or BTP architecture team that plans against an incomplete map makes bad calls in both directions: over-provisioning integration scenarios for systems that are about to be retired, and under-provisioning for critical dependencies nobody flagged. LeanIX's AI-assisted discovery pulls signal from SAP's System Landscape Directory, the BTP cockpit, network-traffic metadata, ITSM ticket data, and structured interview surveys, and stitches it into an application inventory the architecture team validates rather than builds from scratch.

How the AI layer works

Why it matters

  • 15-30% of an estate's 200-1,500 applications are typically unknown to the IT steering committee before discovery runs
  • Undiscovered integrations lead to over-provisioning BTP scenarios for applications being retired and under-provisioning for critical ones
  • The lifecycle recommender scores retirement and migration priority using patterns learned across LeanIX's 20,000+ customer base

Key points

  • SAP acquired LeanIX in November 2023; positioned as the EA discovery layer for BTP transformation programmes.
  • Three AI functions: auto-discovery (shadow applications from network traffic + SLD) · lifecycle recommender · BTP path advisor.
  • Typical discovery yield: 40-80 previously unknown integrations surfaced in first 90 days for large enterprises.
  • Lifecycle rubric: Invest · Tolerate · Migrate · Eliminate — AI-scored from 20,000+ anonymised transformation patterns.
  • BTP path advisor (post-acquisition) maps application tech profile to Integration Suite / Build Process Automation / Build Apps path.
  • Data-quality dependency: AI recommendations require 85-90 % factsheet completeness — validation workshops are mandatory, not optional.
  • Pricing: SAP Transformation Suite tier €150k-€450k/year for 500-1,500 applications; bundled in select RISE Enterprise contracts from 2026.
  • Governance deliverable: ownership matrix + update cadence + review schedule must be a formal project deliverable, not an afterthought.
  • LeanIX AI-Assisted BTP Discovery is mastered only when it changes a named buyer decision.
  • Start with the semantic contract and control model before demonstrating the tool.

Terms used on this page

Factsheet
LeanIX's term for the data record representing one entity in the EA repository — an application, a technology, a business capability, or an IT component. AI recommendations are derived from factsheet data.
Shadow application
An application communicating with SAP systems that is not in the official IT portfolio register — discovered by LeanIX's network-traffic analysis agent.
System Landscape Directory (SLD)
SAP's central register of system instances, software components, and technical landscapes — the primary authoritative input to LeanIX's SAP discovery.
SAP Readiness Check
SAP's tool that analyses a customer's current SAP landscape and produces an S/4HANA migration readiness report including custom code scope, interface inventory, and Fiori app availability.
BTP path advisor
LeanIX feature (post-SAP-acquisition) that maps an application's technology profile to the most suitable BTP service consumption path — Integration Suite, SAP Build, or SAP BTP Extension.
Application Portfolio Management (APM)
The practice of maintaining a governed, up-to-date inventory of all applications in an organisation with their business value, lifecycle status, and technology risk profile.
Decision owner
The accountable person who accepts the trade-off and funds the next action.
Semantic contract
The shared definition of business terms, metrics, entities, and access rules used by tools and teams.
