What is SAP Business AI?

SAP Business AI is SAP's whole AI portfolio — embedded AI in applications, Joule, Joule Assistants and Agents, AI features such as Document AI, and the SAP Business AI Platform — organised since Sapphire 2026 in five layers and sold through Base, Premium and custom-built tiers.

What it is

"SAP Business AI" is SAP's umbrella brand for every AI capability it delivers, whether embedded in an application, exposed through Joule, packaged as an agent, sold as an AI service, or offered as a platform for customers and partners to build their own. It is not a single product or SKU. Understanding the portfolio means answering three questions for any capability: which layer it belongs to, how it is delivered, and how it is commercialised.

Why it matters

Every SAP AI conversation starts with classification: embedded AI and Joule Base are already paid for, agents consume AI Units per action, and custom-built AI is billed at runtime — mixing them up inflates or hides cost.
The five-layer structure (Joule, Autonomous Suite, Industry AI, Business AI Platform, adoption) is how SAP now sells and trains; aligning a proposal to it makes scope and ownership explicit.
Much of the Sapphire 2026 portfolio (assistants, Joule Work, Enterprise Planning agents) is staged across GA, early access and planned releases, so each item must be checked against the quarterly release highlights before it is promised.
