What is SAP Signavio AI Process Mining?

The AI layer's real shift is from producing a conformance report for a human to interpret, to automatically attributing a process deviation to a specific causal factor and ranking interventions by expected cycle-time reduction.

SAP Signavio is the process-intelligence and business-process-management suite SAP acquired in January 2021. Its process-mining component, Signavio Process Intelligence, pulls event data out of SAP transaction tables — the change-document tables CDHDR and CDPOS, plus process tables like VBAK for sales orders or EKKO for purchasing — and reconstructs what actually happened during a business process, as opposed to what the process documentation says should happen. Since 2024-2025 the AI layer on top has expanded significantly, adding automated root-cause analysis, simulation of AI-generated improvement scenarios, and natural-language querying of process data through Joule.

The problem it solves

Every SAP implementation drifts. The process design agreed during blueprinting starts diverging from what people actually do within months of go-live: workarounds accumulate, approval steps get skipped under deadline pressure, rework loops appear that nobody designed. Traditional process audits catch this drift at intervals — a review every six or twelve months, based on interviews and sampling. Process mining catches it continuously and in near-real-time, because it works directly from the transaction data the SAP system is already generating; there is nothing extra to instrument. The AI layer changes what happens once a deviation is found: instead of a conformance report a human analyst has to interpret and chase down, the root-cause engine attributes the deviation to a specific cause — a user group, a material type, a vendor region, a system outage window — and ranks the likely interventions by expected cycle-time improvement.

How the pipeline works

Why it matters

  • Documented process design diverges from actual execution within months of go-live as workarounds and rework loops accumulate
  • Extraction is read-only against change-document tables (CDHDR/CDPOS) and process tables (VBAK/EKKO), so it never touches transactional data
  • Root-cause attribution names a specific factor (user group, material type, vendor region) rather than leaving interpretation to an analyst

Key points

  • SAP acquired Signavio January 2021; Process Intelligence is the process mining component; AI layer expanded 2024-2025.
  • Extracts from CDHDR/CDPOS + process tables (VBAK, EKKO, etc.) via read-only HANA JDBC — no transactional impact.
  • Three AI capabilities: automated root-cause analysis · process simulation with improvement scenarios · Joule natural-language querying (GA Q4 2025).
  • Pre-Joule benchmark: 15-30 % cycle-time reduction on order-to-cash; 10-25 % on procure-to-pay within 12 months (SAP 2024 customer impact study).
  • Joule integration: process owner types natural-language question → Signavio executes conformance filter → returns ranked root causes and actions.
  • SAP-native advantage over Celonis: pre-delivered SAP process reference models reduce time-to-first-insight by 4-6 weeks.
  • Pragmatic rule: SAP-centric estates (> 80 % scope inside SAP) → Signavio; significant non-SAP scope → Celonis.
  • Phase 3 managed-service play: €15-40k/month for 3-5 monitored processes post-go-live.
  • SAP Signavio AI Process Mining is mastered only when it changes a named buyer decision.
  • Start with the semantic contract and control model before demonstrating the tool.

Terms used on this page

Process mining
The technique of extracting event logs from transactional systems and reconstructing actual process execution traces to measure conformance, cycle times, and bottlenecks — distinct from process modelling, which documents intended behaviour.
Event log
The structured dataset that process mining operates on: one row per business event, with a case identifier (e.g. purchase order number), an activity name (e.g. 'Invoice received'), a timestamp, and optional case attributes (company code, vendor region).
Conformance checking
The process-mining analysis that compares each case's actual execution trace against the defined target process model and computes a conformance score — identifying where the actual process deviates from design.
CDHDR / CDPOS
SAP change-document header and line tables — the primary source tables for process mining on SAP systems; they record every field-level change to business documents with a timestamp and user ID.
Root-cause analysis (RCA)
In the Signavio AI context: the automated attribution of a process conformance failure or cycle-time deviation to a ranked list of causal factors (user group, material type, vendor region) using gradient-boosted models trained on the event log.
Order-to-cash (OTC)
The end-to-end SAP business process from sales order creation (VBAK/VBAP) through delivery, goods issue, invoice, and payment receipt — one of the two primary process-mining targets in Signavio.
Procure-to-pay (PtP)
The end-to-end SAP business process from purchase requisition (EBAN) through purchase order (EKKO/EKPO), goods receipt, invoice, and vendor payment — the other primary process-mining target.
Decision owner
The accountable person who accepts the trade-off and funds the next action.
