What is SAP Managed Joule?

SAP-Managed Joule is the standard activation path announced at Sapphire 2026: the customer requests Joule in SAP for Me and SAP provisions and operates the runtime, integrations, identity configuration and updates, with no direct platform-cockpit access for Joule core, Joule Work and Joule Studio. GA was planned for H2 2026; identity data, entitlement and authorisation design stay with the customer.

The shift in one sentence

Until 2026 you got Joule by doing the work yourself: a global account on SAP Business AI Platform (formerly SAP BTP), subaccounts, entitlements, a trust relationship to your Identity Authentication tenant, the Joule booster, and a formation that tied Joule to your SAP products. SAP-Managed Joule inverts that. Announced at SAP Sapphire 2026 as the standard activation path for new Joule deployments, it lets the customer request activation in SAP for Me, through the Portfolio and Products dashboard, while SAP provisions and operates the rest. SAP's learning material says general availability is planned during the second half of 2026; this card found no later status statement as of 4 October 2026, so confirm it for your region and contract.

Why it matters

  • The provisioning model decides who administers Joule, whether you have cockpit access, and in some programmes whether you can use Joule Work at all, so it is a feature-access decision as much as an operating one.
  • Identity does not disappear: Joule and every integrated product still need one Cloud Identity Services tenant and a consistent Global User ID, and SAP's configuration is only as good as your identity data.
  • Tenancy, residency and extensibility under the managed model are thinly documented in public sources; the questions must go to SAP in writing before contract signature.

Key points

  • SAP-Managed Joule: standard activation path for new deployments, announced at Sapphire 2026, requested in SAP for Me (Portfolio and Products dashboard); GA planned for H2 2026.
  • SAP manages four areas: infrastructure and runtime, application integration, identity and role provisioning, lifecycle and updates (SAP Learning, Activating Joule).
  • Joule core, Joule Work and Joule Studio are provisioned via SAP for Me without direct cockpit access; Joule Work Desktop follows under Early Adopter Care (SAP Community, 10 Sep 2026).
  • Entitlement: Joule Base (no cost with SAP cloud subscriptions) or the premium AI offer consumed in AI Units; check in SAP for Me.
  • Classic customer-managed provisioning still exists: global account, subaccounts, das-application (Foundation plan), IAS trust, user_uuid, booster, one 'Integration with Joule' formation.
  • Identity prerequisite is unchanged: one SAP Cloud Identity Services tenant for Joule and all integrated products, same Global User ID everywhere.
  • Not documented in the sources reviewed: tenancy and residency detail, custom destinations, Preview Landscape access and a migration tool or date for existing customer-managed setups.
