SAP AI agents: what ships, what is roadmap, and what you build

SAP AI agents are Joule agents: components that take a goal, plan, call tools against live SAP data and stop for a human when a step needs a decision. They come in three build types — standard agents SAP ships inside its applications, standard agents you extend, and custom agents built in Joule Studio or in pro-code and connected over A2A. The count you quote depends on whether you read announcements or availability: more than 200 agents were announced at Sapphire 2026, while SAP's Q1 2026 highlights listed over 30 specialised agents available.

Skill, agent, assistant: get the word right first

A Joule skill is deterministic and does one bounded thing, such as reading a sales order. An agent interprets what a tool returned and decides the next step. Since Sapphire 2026, a Joule Assistant is the role-level layer that groups SAP-delivered agents; in SuccessFactors, enabling an assistant in SAP for Me makes its agents available, and role permissions decide who may use them.

The test we apply: if the logic fits a fixed flowchart, it is a skill or a workflow. If a step depends on reading the previous result, it is an agent.

The standard catalogue: read availability, not the keynote

The standard agents are fixed: you activate and configure, you do not change the logic. Status varies agent by agent and edition by edition. The Accounting Accruals Agent went to beta in Q4 2025 and to Restricted Availability in September 2026, with GA planned for Q1 2027 per SAPinsider. The Production Planning and Operations Agent releases up to 20 production orders per run and requires scope item BJ5.

Prerequisites — scope items, roles, OData services, entitlements — belong in the project plan from day one. The only list that binds a client is SAP Help for their product, edition, region and release.

Building your own: Agent Builder and its hard limits

The agent builder in Joule Studio, classic edition, is listed GA in SAP's Q4 2025 release highlights. You set a description, expertise, instructions, a planning model and a response model, a maximum number of thinking steps, tools (skills, document grounding, subagents) and MCP servers on a separate tab.

The documented limits decide what you can promise: subagents run synchronously and sequentially, at most 5 direct and 25 in total, inside the same project. Code-based agents reached through A2A 0.3.0 face a 60-second synchronous limit. Beyond them, the design needs pro-code.

MCP and A2A: two protocols, two hops

MCP is how an agent uses capabilities: tools, resources and prompts on a server. A2A is how an agent works with another agent that has its own reasoning, through tasks with states such as input-required or completed. SAP is a founding contributor of the Linux Foundation A2A project, and Joule's bi-directional A2A was announced at Sapphire 2026 as generally available in Q4 2026 — a roadmap date, not a shipped fact, as of our September 2026 review.

The same gap shows in the SAP × Google Cloud agent collaboration announced on 22 April 2026: marketing first, available in H2 2026.

Governance and cost: AI Agent Hub and agent actions

SAP AI Agent Hub, built on SAP LeanIX, inventories agents, LLMs and MCP servers with lifecycle, verification and value tracking; some of its features sit in Early Adopter Care. Agents are Premium AI capabilities billed per agent action, and Joule Studio needs Joule Base or AI Units plus its own SKU.

What it means for an analytics consultant

Agents are grounded in SAP data through the context layer — Knowledge Graph, domain models and Business Data Cloud. An agent that reads a badly modelled data product will act on it. The analytics consultant's leverage is therefore upstream: clean semantics, clear ownership, and a labelled hop diagram showing where MCP ends and A2A begins.

What we cannot assert

We cannot state a price per agent action: our corpus records the billing unit (AI Units, per action) but no published rate. The Q4 2026 GA for Joule's bi-directional A2A and the Q1 2027 GA for the Accounting Accruals Agent are announced dates read in September 2026, and roadmap dates move.

How many SAP AI agents are available?

It depends on the date. SAP listed over 30 specialised agents available in its Q1 2026 highlights, and announced more than 200 agents and 50 assistants at Sapphire 2026 for the coming months. Scope on the SAP Help list for your edition and release.

Can I change the logic of a standard SAP agent?

No. Standard agents are configured or activated only. SAP announced extensibility of delivered Joule agents in November 2025, which lets you add tools, instructions or data sources; anything beyond that is a custom agent.

Is Joule's agent-to-agent (A2A) support live?

Joule Studio agents natively support A2A per Sapphire 2026. Joule's bi-directional A2A was announced as generally available in Q4 2026.

How are SAP agents charged?

Agents are Premium AI capabilities billed per agent action through AI Units. SAP does not publish a single price per action in our corpus, so model consumption from the client's own contract.
