BW Bridge Deep Dive

BW Bridge coexistence architecture: three consumption modes converge through one RFC connection to a bridge-off gate — architecture diagram for BW Bridge Deep Dive, Analytics Legends Academy module M062

As of 2026-08-16

BW Bridge = Datasphere space with BW runtime, connecting to BW/4HANA via RFC. Three modes: ABAP CDS Federation (real-time, source-loaded), Replication to local table (production default), BEx direct (coexistence only). RFC = single point of failure — redundant connection + ODQ_MONITOR mandatory. Bridge-off gate: 30 days production + 100 % consumer migration confirmed. Transitional tool, not destination.

What you will learn

  • Configure a BW Bridge in SAP Datasphere — provision the Bridge space, connect to BW/4HANA or BW on HANA, and validate replication of InfoProviders end-to-end
  • Distinguish the three BW Bridge operating modes (ABAP CDS Federation, Replication to Datasphere, and BEx consumption) and select the correct mode by latency and volume profile
  • Diagnose the four most common BW Bridge failure modes (RFC connection drop, delta queue overflow, schema drift on BW side, CU quota breach) and apply documented resolution steps
  • Architect a Bridge coexistence phase within a BW-to-BDC migration programme — define the bridge-on / bridge-off criteria and the cutover gate checklist

The BW Bridge is SAP's official coexistence mechanism, letting an SAP Datasphere tenant read BW/4HANA or BW-on-HANA objects — InfoProviders, BEx queries, process chain outputs — without re-engineering them ahead of a full migration. The single most important framing to hold onto throughout this module is that the Bridge is a transitional tool, not a destination. The senior consultant who lets a client treat it as a permanent architecture is the one who fields the CIO's "why is this still here two years later?" call, and by then the answer is usually an uncomfortable one about licence costs nobody budgeted to keep paying.
