What is Joule in supply chain (SAP IBP, S/4HANA supply chain)?

SAP documents Joule's supply-chain footprint across two products: S/4HANA Cloud (navigation, PO/delivery insights) and SAP Integrated Business Planning, which went GA together on 19 December 2024. IBP's Joule chapter covers master-data health checks, job monitoring, sharing, time-series planning-run explanations, order-based planning actions and scenario lifecycle management — plus an early-adopter-only historical lead-time monitor.

Two supply chain surfaces, one shared entitlement

Joule's supply-chain footprint spans two products with different documentation: SAP S/4HANA Cloud's own Supply Chain chapter (transactional insights on purchase orders and outbound deliveries, navigation, enablement guidance) and a dedicated chapter for SAP Integrated Business Planning (SAP IBP), which combines supply chain monitoring, sales and operations planning, demand management, inventory planning and supply planning. SAP announced general availability for both together on 19 December 2024 — Joule reached SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and SAP Integrated Business Planning for Supply Chain at the same time, with SAP Asset Performance Management in Early Adopter access at that point. Using Joule within either requires an additional entitlement and authorization beyond the base subscription — SAP's IBP documentation points customers to their account executive and to a dedicated entitlement page, the same discipline seen across every Joule line of business.

Why it matters

SAP IBP's order-based planning capabilities are transactional, not just informational: Joule can create stock transfer or purchase requisitions and start planning runs directly against a named scenario — a real change-management and authorization conversation, not just a chatbot demo.
Capabilities SAP described as 'planned' in the December 2024 S/4HANA supply-chain announcement (explaining planning results, comparing scenarios) are now documented as live under SAP IBP specifically — citing the older announcement alone understates what is actually available today.
The historical lead-time change monitor is explicitly early-adopter-only, gated on a request to SAP — a capability a client may have seen in a roadmap deck is not something every tenant can turn on.
